Hyssop, (Hyssopus officinalis), commonly called Common hyssop, garden hyssop, Curdukotu, hastipippili, hisopo, yanagi-hakka, Yssop, Hyssop Herb, Isopo, Ysopo is a garden herb of the Lamiaceae or mint family whose flowers and evergreen leaves are used as a flavoring for foods and beverages and as a folk medicine. Mint family consists of a wide variety of medicinal and kitchen herbs. Other popular plants in this family are peppermint, basil, sage, lavender, thyme, oregano, rosemary and catnip. It is native to the northern Mediterranean coast and Asia Minor, but has naturalized along roads in some parts of the U.S. Many believe that the name Hyssop has been derived from the Hebrew word “Aesob” which means holy herb, and also from the Greek word “Hysoppus". It is said that centuries ago the herb was used in cleaning and purifying sacred places. Leaves have been and still are used in cooking to flavor such things as meats, soups, sauces, salads or stews. Hyssop oil is currently used as a flavoring agent in Chartreuse liquor. Plants are attractive to bees and butterflies.

The ancient Romans used Hyssop for protecting themselves from plague. They prepared a medicated wine using Hyssop leaves and flowers and valued it as a natural remedy for plague and certain other health disorders. Hyssop tea, infusion and tincture have been used in the treatment of dropsy and jaundice.

Bible reveals the genuine use of Hyssop by saying “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean” in Psalm 51:7. Hyssop is held-high as a spiritual herb since the Biblical times for its potential to purify the mind, cleanse the soul and improve divinity and supports nourishment from within.

“Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. Not one of you shall go out the door of his house until morning”. Exodus 12:22, is another Biblical verse talking about the greatness and purifying abilities of Hyssop herb. Bible also records the use of Hyssop by influential Biblical leaders including Jesus, Moses, Solomon and David. There are about 126 verses in the Bible that talk about Hyssop. It was also used in cleaning and polishing sanctified places.

There are four varietals of the species, each are distinguishable by their flower’s color or size. H. alba has white flowers, H. rubia has red flowers, H. rosea has pink flowers and H. grandiflora has larger bluish-purple flowers. A study found that of these four phenotypes, the blueish-purple variety has the strongest odor of the species.

Hyssop is mainly used to relieve coughs and airway congestion. It is used with horehound for bronchitis and asthma, coughs due to colds, nose and throat infections and consumption. The odor of hyssop is reminiscent of camphor (it will repel moths and other insects).

Persians used Hyssop oil in skin lotions to augment their complexion and enhance skin health. It was used by the Europeans as air freshener and the traditional Indians used Hyssop for healing wounds, treat bruises, lessen excess fluid content in the body and to alleviate muscular pain. Hyssop is also a popular ingredient of Chartreuse liquor.

Respiratory Health:

Hyssop is an expectorant and antispasmodic herb, helping to suppress coughs and help clear the lungs of phlegm. Its expectorant qualities come from the active ingredient marubiin, which has been established to loosen phlegm, making it easier to cough up.

Folk healers have long believed that Hyssop can aid with respiratory conditions. Now research also backs these claims. According to this study, Hyssop extracts could be effective in treating respiratory infections caused by various microbes. Hyssop essential oil can be also used to relieve symptoms of a cough, cold, flu, congestion, bronchitis, asthma, and allergies. Hyssop contains antispasmodic properties, which help reduce spasms and relieve a cough. It is known as an expectorant, which can help loosen excess phlegm trapped in the lungs and respiratory tract. Furthermore, the antimicrobial properties of this essential oil help fight off harmful pathogens that cause the illnesses in the first place.

A 2019 double blind study of 46 children examined the influence of an herbal mixture including Hyssop (along with chamomile, marshmallow root, malva, liquorice, jujube date and maidenhair fern) on intermittent asthma. At the onset of cold symptoms, the children were either given the herbal blend for five days, or placebo. The herbal blend was found to reduce the onset of viral respiratory tract infection, reduced cough, and waking up in the middle of the night.

If you’re suffering from a respiratory condition, diffuse hyssop essential oil throughout the home. Alternatively, add a few drops to a bowl of hot water and breathe in the healing vapors or mix with a carrier oil and massage gently onto the chest and neck.

There is a popular recipe for Hyssop Oxymel which is a blend of Hyssop, Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar. This can be used as a home made cough syrup and cold and flu remedy. Its fresh, minty properties also make Hyssop and excellent herb for clearing the stuffy head that so often accompanies the common cold.

Cold and Flu:

For thousands of years Hyssop has been used for coughs with congested mucus. It both stimulates mucus and expectorates mucus, which enables the lungs and coughing mechanisms to rid it from the body. Herbalist Nicholas Schnell recommends it for chronic sinus infections.

Hyssop is probably most famously known as an herb for helping with symptoms of a cold or flu. It is often used for children, but is very appropriate for adults as well. As a stimulating diaphoretic it warms the body, pushing out coldness and opening the pores. This is especially ideal for when a person feels cold and is shivering with a slight fever.

In colds, accompanied with coughs and pectoral difficulty, where any degree of fever is present, the somewhat old-fashioned combination of hyssop with horehound has scarcely even yet been superseded by a more serviceable remedy. The two agents are combined in equal proportions and, given in the form of infusion, as freely and copiously as the patient can be prevailed upon to take it; the addition of honey to this infusion is, in many cases, found to augment its power, and, a consideration with patients possessing delicate stomachs, to some extent to cover the taste of the medicine. The herb helps to reduce fever by inducing sweating and therefore was traditionally mixed in bathing water.

Cough and Whooping Cough:

Coughing is a common reaction of the respiratory system trying to expel harmful microbes, dust or irritants, so hyssop’s antispasmodic and antiseptic properties make it a great natural treatment for coughs and other respiratory conditions. Hyssop is antispasmodic, meaning it relieves spasms in the respiratory system and soothes coughs. It’s also an expectorant, it loosens phlegm that has been deposited in the respiratory tracts. This property helps heal infections from the common cold, and it helps treat respiratory conditions, such as serving as a bronchitis natural remedy.

In cough and cold prescriptions, particularly for whooping cough, and in other troubles of infancy. The 1 ounce to 1 pint infusion is given in wineglass doses, or according to age.

Sore Throat:

Hyssop can also work as a remedy for sore throats, making it a great tool for people who use their voices throughout the day, like teachers, singers and lecturers. The best way to soothe the throat and respiratory system is to drink hyssop tea or add a few drops of oil to your throat and chest.

Natural Expectorant:

Hyssop oil helps in clearing the sputum naturally. When you have a cold or throat infection, you may not be able to breathe properly. This is mainly due to the excess mucus accumulated in your chest. However, Hyssop oil softens the hard mucus and helps you spit it out, thereby easing your cold. It is often used as a key ingredient in cough syrups, as it’s a cough reliever.

Asthma:

Hyssop oil also relieves asthma mainly because of its bronchodilator properties. Asthma is a condition that is accompanied by breathing difficulties. There is an excess mucus production, constriction as well as swelling in the airways. These together make cause difficulties in breathing. While some experience minor asthma attacks, for others, it can be life-threatening.

However, Hyssop oil dilates the airways and prevents excess mucus production. It also has antitussive and expectorant properties, which make it useful in treating other respiratory diseases like chronic bronchitis.

A 2017 analysis of numerous Persian medicinal plants showed that hyssop and several other plants were able to improve inflammation, oxidative stress, allergic response, tracheal smooth muscle constriction, and airway remodeling in asthma. They suggested further trials to see what role these herbs may be able to play in the management of asthma.

A 2014 study "The Effects of Uygur Herb Hyssopus officinalis L. on the Process of Airway Remodeling in Asthmatic Mice" in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine by Xiaojuan Ma, Xiumin Ma, Zhixing Ma, Zhan Sun, Wenyan Yu, Jing Wang, Fengsen Li, and Jianbing Ding evaluated the effect of Hyssopus officinalis on airway immune regulation and airway inflammation in a mouse model of chronic asthma. Results showed H. officinalis not only plays an anti-inflammatory role by inhibiting the invasion of eosinophils and decreasing the levels of IgE, but also affects immune regulation. Study evaluated the mechanism of Uygur herb Hyssopus officinalis in the process of airway remodeling. Results showed H. officinalis could inhibit airway remodeling by correcting imbalance of MMP-9/TIMP-1 ration.

Another 2011 study "The effect of Uygur medicine Hyssopus officinalis L on expression of T-bet, GATA-3 and STAT-3 mRNA in lung tissue of asthma rats" by Wang HY, Ding JB, Halmurat U, Hou M, Xue ZQ, Zhu M, Tian SG, Ma XM. evaluated the Uygur medicine Hyssop on T-bet, GATA-3, STAT-3 mRNA levels of asthma rats to explore the mechanisms of its treatment effect in asthma. Results showed Hyssopus officinalis probably regulates the differentiation of Th1, Th2 and Th17 on transcription level for its anti-inflammatory effect.

Lung Lock:

From asthma as well as coughing fits to allergies as well as recurring infections, locked up lungs can be very unpleasant as well as anxiety-inducing. Whilst Hyssop herbal tea is not a good tea to sip throughout an attack, it can make an incredible tonic tea to sip in between issues and may assist in preventing them in the foreseeable future. Since Hyssop cleans as well as heals, it might simply help eliminate the problem which leads to breathing difficulties in the first place.

Chest Illnesses:

Coughs, colds, as well as allergies appear to hit the lungs hard no matter where they settle. Including Hyssop in your favorite ‘get better fast’ herbal tea blend occasionally like this might help clear and calm the lungs so as to return to feeling better fast.

Kills Bacterial Infections:

F pinocamphone, iso-pinocamphone, and β-pinene present in hyssop extracts are highly effective in fighting against bacteria. Hyssop essential oil is active against food-borne bacteria, which spoil the food. Thus, Hyssopus officinalis is known to increase the shelf-life of products. Carvacrol and Pinicarvone in H. officinalis fight pathogens such as Candida albicans and S.aureus. Terpinen-4-ol and iso-pinocamphone fight bacteria such as Typhimurium and E.coli.

A 2012 study of essential oil of aerial parts "Essential Oil Composition and Antibacterial Activity of Hyssopus officinalis L. Grown in Iran" in Asian J. Exp. Biol. Sci. by Nooshin Dehghanzadeh, Saghar Ketabchi, Ardalan Alizadeh yielded thirty nine components, with major components of thymol 18,95%, ß-bisabolol 10.62%, carvacrol 7.73%, n-Dodecan (5.23%, caryophyllene 4.96%, ortho-acetanisol 4.72%, camphor 3.47%, cumin aldehyde 3.22% and spathulenol 3.02%. The oil showed high antibacterial activity against Erwinia amylovora and Klebsiella sp.

Another 2009 study "Assessment of antibacterial activity of three plantsused in Pakistan to cure respiratory diseases" in African Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 8 by Zabta Khan Shinwari et al of the in vitro antimicrobial activity of three plant extracts including H officinalis against B subtilis, E coli, P aeruginosa, S typhimurium and S aureus, maximum antibacterial activity was exhibited by all three plant extracts, including P aeruginosa which was not inhibited by the control antibiotic.

In a 1998 "Antimicrobial properties of the linalol-rich essential oil of Hyssopus officinalis L." in Flavour and Fragrance Journal Vol. 13, No. 5 study yielded pinocamphone and isopinocamphone. All yeasts were strongly inhibited, seven strains of C albicans, C krusei and C tropicalis. Limonene may be responsible for the antimycotic action.

Parasites:

Hyssop has the ability to fight parasites, which are organisms that feed off the nutrients of other organisms. Some examples of parasites include tapeworm, fleas, hookworms and flukes. Because it’s a vermifuge, hyssop oil expels parasitic works, especially in the intestines. When a parasite lives in and feed on its host, it disrupts nutrient absorption and causes weakness and disease. If the parasite is living in the intestines, it disrupts the digestive and immune systems.

Therefore, hyssop can be a key part of a parasite cleanse, as hyssop helps many systems in the body and ensures that your needed nutrients aren’t taken by these dangerous organisms.

Antifungal:

A 2015 study "Chemical composition and antifungal activity of essential oil of Hyssopus officinalis L. from Bulgaria against clinical isolates of Candida species" in Biotechnology & Biotechnological Equipment , Volume 29, Issue 3 by Yana Hristova, Juergen Wanner, Leopold Jirovetz, Iris Stappen, Ivan Iliev & Velizar Gochev, the essential oil of Hyssopus officinalis showed a very strong antifungal activity. The most abundant components in oil are isopinocamphone (43%), pinocamphoe (16%) and b-pinene (16%). The essential oil was fungistatic on Aspergillus fumigatus. The strong antifungal potential of Hyssop essential oil can be explained by the high amount of ketones, its main constituents. (1) Hyssop oil demonstrated antifungal activity against 52 clinical isolates and reference strains of Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, C. paraapsilosis, and C. krusei. The essential oil inhibited both fluconazole-sensitive and fluconazole-resistant strains.

Disinfectant:

Simply diffusing hyssop essential oil throughout the home can rid the air of harmful pathogens, allowing you and your family to remain healthy. Its antibacterial, antiseptic, antimicrobial, and anti-viral properties cleanse the air. It also mixes well with other essential oils including tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, and lemon oil, which extend its cleansing properties.

Antioxidant:

Oxidation is a destructive process, which results from pollution and chemicals from the environment. It generates free radicals that mainly cause two things: deadly diseases and early aging. However, the compounds β-pinene, f pinocamphone, and iso-pinocamphone present in Hyssopus officinalis extracts have rich antioxidant properties.

A study conducted in 2016 included the aerial parts of Hyssopus officinalis collected from Kashmir-Leh highway, India, in October. The plant was flowering and was present at an altitude of 11,562 feet. The researchers assessed the antioxidant potential of the plant extract by few assessments such as scavenging assay, reducing power assay, the total antioxidant capacity, and DPPH radical. The results confirmed that H. officinalis extracts possess great antioxidant properties, mainly because of the presence of flavonoids and phenolic compounds. Apigenin 7-O-β-D-glucuronide is a significant flavonoid present in the essential oil of Hyssop.

A team of researchers in Romania published an article in a 2014 edition of the journal Molecules that explored the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of hyssop. Their work revealed high levels of polyphenols (a type of antioxidant) and good antioxidant activity. On top of that, extracts and oils from the plant showed moderate antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. However, these were results in a laboratory setting, not in the human body. We'll need further research to confirm the possible benefits of hyssop in these and most areas.

A 2012 study published in the Journal Acta Poloniae Pharmaceutica also found nitric oxide scavenging activity, which supports the theory that Hyssop is an antioxidant. A growing body of literature supports this contention.

Free Radicals:

In a 2010 study in Pak. J. Pharm. Sci., Vol.23, No.1 by Mohammad Ali Ebrahimzadeh et al established the antioxidant potency of of four medicinal and aromatic plants, H officinalis was second in DPPH-radical scavenging and first in reducing powers.

Antiviral:

Hyssop prevents infections from developing in wounds and cuts. Because of its antiseptic properties, when it’s applied to an opening of the skin, it fights infection and kills bacteria. Hyssop also helps in healing deep cuts, scars, insect bites and even can be one of the great home remedies for acne. Few viruses are as well-known to the general public, or as common, as herpes simplex 1 and 2. Hyssop may have some use in preventing the spread of these viruses.

A study done at the Department of Virology, Hygiene Institute in Germany tested hyssop oil’s ability to fight genital herpes by testing plaque reduction. Genital herpes is a chronic, persistent infection that is spread efficiently and silently as a sexually transmitted disease. The study found that hyssop oil lowered plaque formation by more than 90%, proving that the oil interacted with the virus and serves as a therapeutic application for the treatment of herpes.

A 2016 review of studies on Iranian Herbal Medicines for Herpes Simplex Viruses (HSVs) lists several studies showing that, in mice, an extract of hyssop was able to slow the onset of infection by HSV-1 by more than 50%. Because of how common herpes infections are, and because the virus stays in your system permanently, it's likely that we'll see more research in this area. Researchers concluded that these plants may help prevent and treat some viral diseases and mention several aspects that are worthy of further investigation.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV):

In accordance with clinical tests, dried Hyssop leaves show powerful anti-HIV activity because of the presence of tannins and caffeic acid. As a result, it will help in avoiding replication of HIV, that makes it good for individuals with AIDS.

One promising research done in the Department of Medicine, North Shore University Hospital in New York discovered that hyssop extracts consist of caffeic acid, unidentified tannins and possibly a third class of unidentified higher molecular weight compounds which exhibit strong anti-HIV activity – thus, it might be beneficial in the management of patients along with AIDS. The antiviral activity of hyssop’s compounds turn out to be beneficial in combating life-threatening diseases.

A 2018 review of the Literature on Lamiaceae Plants Against the Retrovirus HIV showed promising preliminary results. Researchers said the plants appear to target structures that allow the virus to attach to, and therefore infect cells. They may also destroy key enzymes that HIV relies on for its life cycle.

A 1995 study "Isolation of a previously unidentified polysaccharide (MAR-10) from Hyssop officinalis that exhibits strong activity against human immunodeficiency virus type 1" in Biochem Biophys Res Commun. by Gollapudi S, Sharma HA, Aggarwal S, Byers LD, Ensley HE, Gupta S. evaluated a polysaccharide (MAR-10) from the aqueous extract of Hyssopus officinalis for activity against HIV-1 (SF strain) in HUT78 T cell line. MAR-10 showed a concentration-dependent inhibition of HIV-1 replication via inhibition of HIV-1 p24 antigen and syncytia formation.

Another 1990 study "Inhibition of HIV replication by Hyssop officinalis extracts" in Antiviral Res. by Kreis W, Kaplan MH, Freeman J, Sun DK, Sarin PS. reported on the strong anti-HIV activity of crude extracts of dried leaves via inhibition of synciytia formation, HIV reverse transcriptase (RT), and p17 and p24 antigen expression. Study showed HO extracts contain caffeic acid, unidentified tannins, and possibly a third class of unidentified molecular weight compounds that exhibit strong anti-HIV activity.

Supports Cardiovascular Health - Heart Health:

Blood Circulation:

An increase in blood flow or circulation in the body benefits the heart and the body’s muscles and arteries. Hyssop improves and promotes circulation because of its anti-rheumatic properties. By increasing circulation, hyssop can work as a natural remedy for gout, rheumatism, arthritis and swelling. Your heart rate lowers when your blood circulates properly, and then your heart muscles relax and your blood pressure flows evenly throughout the body, affecting every organ.

So many people are looking for natural arthritis treatments because it can be a crippling condition. Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, occurs when cartilage between joints wears down, causing inflammation and pain. By increasing circulation, Hyssop oil and tea inhibit swelling and inflammation, allowing the blood to flow through the body and relieve the pressure that builds up because of clogged arteries.

Hyssop essential oil can be massaged into the chest, arms, legs, and lower back to help improve circulation. Before applying it topically, dilute it with a carrier oil. You can gently massage the diluted oil into muscles or dilute it with a carrier oil and put three to five drops of the mixture in a bath to improve circulation.

Platelet Aggregation Inhibition:

Hyssop extracts have antiplatelet properties. Platelets help in the formation of blood clots. Though blood clots are necessary to prevent unnecessary bleeding, when they form at the wrong places such as within blood vessels, they can be life-threatening.

Anti-platelet drugs are useful in such cases. But thanks to Hyssop, which has such properties naturally, making it useful in stroke and heart patients. Stroke is a deadly condition where the blood vessels in the brain rupture forming clots. They need an immediate address. Heart attacks and heart failures are fatal conditions that occur due to the formation of blood clots in the walls of blood vessels.

Diabetes:

Alpha-amylase is an enzyme that breaks down the glycogen (stored fat) present in your body to glucose. Thus, it can raise blood sugar levels. At a concentration of 0.1-0.5 mg/ml, Hyssop extracts inhibit the action of α-amylase, making them useful in diabetes.

Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar levels rise above normal. It needs immediate attention. If left untreated, it reduces the lifespan by giving rise to complications such as kidney failure. The earlier you address, the better it is. Preventing the conversion of glycogen to glucose is one of the ways to avoid the rise of Blood Sugar Levels (BSL). Likewise, α-glucosidase is another enzyme that raises the blood sugar levels by utilizing carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the sources of energy that you obtain from the foods you eat. By inhibiting the action of α-glucosidase, hyssop prevents hyperglycemia (or high BSL).

A study of aqueous methanol extracts of dried Hyssop leaves published in 2013 confirmed the effects of hyssop extracts on intestinal α-glucosidase activity and hyperglycemia/high blood sugar levels.

Blood Sugar:

Hyssop tea might offer blood sugar-lowering benefits.

According to a test tube study published in the January 2004 issue of the Journal Phytochemistry. Researchers identified antioxidant compounds Hyssop leaves that inhibit activity of the enzyme alpha-glucosidase, which breaks starch into sugar.

Another study published in the October 2003 issue of the Journal of Nutrition Science and Vitaminology found that Hyssop extract administered before a high-carbohydrate meal prevented a spike in blood sugar by inhibiting carbohydrate digestion. Researchers concluded that Hyssop may be useful as a supplement for managing elevated blood sugar levels.

Reduces Inflammation:

A 2011 study "Phytochemical analysis and antioxidant activity of Hyssopus officinalis L. from Iran" in Advanced Pharmaceutical Bulletin by Fatemeh Fathiazad, Masoumeh Mazandarani, Sanaz Hamedeyazdan evaluated the flavonoid content of aerial parts of H. officinalis. Apigenin 7-O-ß-D-glucoronide was isolated as the major flavonoid. The N-butanol extract, because of the highest phenolic content had the best antioxidant activity.

Redness and Swelling:

The essential oil extracted from Hyssopus officinalis has anti-inflammatory properties. Swelling, redness, pain, fever, and loss of movement are the signs of inflammation. Hyssop essential oil helps you fight all the signs of inflammation even in the mucus lining of your nose and airways.

According to Turkish Folk Medicine, Hyssop relaxes the blood vessels and promotes sweating. It relieves various pains including joint pains, toothaches, sores, bruises, and ear pains. When used as a bath oil, it eases pains and extreme tiredness including menstrual pains. The oil helps in treating various skin problems such as rashes, boils, insect bites, as well as to lighten scars.

Relieves Pain and Cramps:

Muscle Pain and Spams:

Almost everybody has likely experienced discomfort in his or her muscles at some point. Because almost every part of the body has muscle tissue, this type of pain can be felt practically anywhere. While further research is welcomed in this area, it’s widely believed that Hyssop can help relieve muscle pain and spasms because it calms the respiratory and digestive systems. Hyssop oil’s antispasmotic properties can help treat muscle aches, cramps and charley horses naturally.

Ancient Greeks and Indians used poultices made using Hyssop to treat bruises, scar, frostbite, conjunctivitis, insect bites, muscle pain and dental cavities. Leaves of the plant were used in cleansing rituals during the biblical times due to its anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.

A study done at the Department of Pharmacology of Natural Substances and General Physiology in Italy found that Hyssop oil had muscle-relaxing activity when it was tested on guinea pig and rabbit intestines. The hyssop oil treatment inhibited contractions and reduced the amplitude of spontaneous movements.

A 2002 study in Planta Med by Lu M, Battinelli L, Daniele C, Melchioni C, Salvatore G, Mazzanti G. evaluated the muscle relaxing activity of essential oil of Hyssopus officinalis and some of its main components (isopinocamphone, limonene and beta-pinene) on isolated preparations of guinea-pig and rabbit intestine. Essential oil and isopinocamphone inhibited acetylcholine- and BaCl2-induced contractions in guinea-pig ileum. Essentia oil blocked CaCl2 induced contractions in guinea pig ileum. In addition to the antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties of the oil, it is ideal for soothing and relaxing sore muscles. It can also help reduce cramps and spasms.

To relieve sore muscles after a long day, mix a few drops of hyssop essential oil with a carrier oil and gently massage onto the sore areas. You can also add a few drops of hyssop essential oil to a warm bath.

Using a dilution of 1 to 3% Hyssop oil with a carrier oil, make a blend to massage into sore or aching muscles. As it increases circulation, it speeds healing and reduces muscle soreness. If you get a cramp or spasm in a muscle, this blend can be rubbed directly into the area. Its anti-spasmodic properties can alleviate the pain and the spasm.

Dysmenorrhea:

Dysmenorrhea is definitely the medical term for menstrual cramps. As hyssop is undoubtedly an emmenagogue it will help women along with irregular, obstructed, painful or exhausting menstruation. This opens menses, causes it to be regular and in addition helps overcome symptoms related to menses just like nausea, headache, pain in lower abdomen, fatigue, appetite loss, as well as mood swings. Hyssop assists manage irregular menstrual cycles and may be used to deal with the signs of menopause.

Hemorrhoids (Piles):

Because of its ability to improve circulation, Hyssop oil is also a home remedy and treatment for hemorrhoids, which are experienced by 75% of Americans at some point in their lives. Hemorrhoids are caused by an increase in pressure on the veins of the anus and rectum. The pressure on the veins causes swelling, pain and bleeding.

Boosts Immune System:

Like many herbs, Hyssop improves circulation and digestion, while it kills bacteria and parasites, all of these benefits boost the immune system to work properly. By decreasing inflammation and allowing blood to run through our organs, hyssop oil maintains the function of the entire body. Hyssop contains antioxidants. As research suggests, antioxidants can play a part in improving immune responses.

One promising study done at the Department of Medicine, North Shore University Hospital in New York found that hyssop extracts contain caffeic acid, unidentified tannins and possibly a third class of unidentified higher molecular weight compounds that exhibit strong anti-HIV activity, thus, it may be useful in the treatment of patients with AIDS.

Improves Digestive Health:

Hyssop oil is a stimulant, so it increases the production of secretions, like bile, digestive enzymes and acid. These gastric juices are necessary in order to break down food as it makes its way to the stomach. We have digestive juices that contain enzymes in order to speed up the chemical reactions in the body and break down food into nutrients. By stimulating the production of the key compounds needed for healthy digestion, Hyssop also boosts nutrition uptake. The antispasmodic properties of Hyssop are also effective at relieving digestive cramps and flatulence.

By facilitating digestion, hyssop oil helps with the decomposition of complex proteins, carbohydrates and nutrients. Because the digestive system interacts with all other body systems, including the nervous, endocrine and immune systems, the role that hyssop plays as a stimulant is very beneficial. Hyssop oil can also be helpful with intestinal gas, indigestion and loss of appetite.

It also helps to promote peristaltic motion in the intestines, which further assists the digestive process. Additionally, the carminative properties of this oil help relieve flatulence and can reduce indigestion, nausea, loss of appetite, and heartburn. Research has found that, alongside other extracts, Hyssop can actually assist digestion. One of the ways it does this is by soothing and cleaning the mouth and throat.

To promote proper digestion, mix a few drops of this essential oil with a carrier oil and massage onto the lower abdomen. Alternatively, diffuse the oil throughout a room or keep a bottle on hand to sniff throughout the day.

Infusion made from Hyssop acts as an excellent tonic for the digestive system and helps in treating weak digestions. Many believe that the herb also helps in the functioning of the liver and gall bladder.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):

Hyssop essential oil helps in treating IBS. It causes pain or cramps in the lower belly. It further causes loose motions, constipation, flatulence, and formation of excess gas. An overgrowth of bacteria in your small intestine can lead to IBS. However, the antibacterial properties in hyssop help heal IBS naturally.

Gastric Ulcer:

Many of the traditional uses of Hyssop involve indigestion, and a 2014 study uncovers a possible reason for that. Researchers found that it acts against two chemicals in the body that are implicated in ulcers: urease and a-chymotrypsin. Because of this, they concluded that hyssop may be an effective ulcer treatment. We'll need human studies to know for sure.

A study "To Explore the Ulceroprotective and Antioxidant Potential of Hyssopus officinalis in Ethanol-Induced Gastric Ulcers in Rats" in British Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, Vol. 2, Issue 3 by Amita Saini and Ramica Sharma pretreatment with an ethanol extract of Hyssopus officinalis in ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in rats showed significant ulceroprotective and antioxidant effect.

Kidney Health:

Urinary Tract Infection:

Since it has anti-bacterial qualities, consuming it frequently reduces the signs and symptoms of the bladder infection as well as helps prevent it from spreading on the kidneys.

Detox the Body:

The diuretic properties of hyssop essential oil help increase urination and assist in the removal of excess fats, salts, and water. This essential oil also acts as a febrifuge, which can reduce fevers by increased sweating and toxin removal. By removing unwanted toxins from your body, Hyssop essential oil strengthens your immune system and helps your body fight off illnesses.

To aid in the detoxing process, diffuse Hyssop essential oil throughout the home. You can also mix a few drops with a carrier oil and gently massage onto the soles of your feet to reduce fevers.

Cancer - Treatment and Prevention:

A 2017 study out of India suggests that Hyssop may be one of the more potent anti-cancer herbs in this family, killing 82% of breast cancer cells in laboratory studies. While this is extremely promising, it must be replicated in human studies before we'll know whether it's a safe and effective treatment.

A 2014 review by researchers from Poland, Zielinska and Matkowski found evidence that herbs in the Lamiaceae family, which includes Hyssop, may be able to destroy cancer cells.

Skin Care:

Hyssop essential oil has astringent properties, which help tone the skin and reduce signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.
