Indonesian Cinnamon scientifically known as Cinnamomum burmannii is one of several plants in the genus Cinnamomum and (Lauraceae) Laurel family whose bark is sold as the spice cinnamon. The plant is native to China and Vietnam and has been introduced throughout Asia, into the Réunion islands and into Central, South and North America. It is normally found in West Sumatra and western Jambi province, with the Kerinci region. Some of the popular common names of the plant are batavia cinnamon, batavia-cassia, cassia, cassia vera, indonesian cinnamon, indonesian-cassia, java-cassia, malayan cinnamon, malaysian cinnamon, padang cassia, padang cinnamon, Jawa cassia, Fagot cassia and Korintje-cassia.

Indonesian Cinnamon is one of several plants in the genus Cinnamomum whose bark is sold as the spice cinnamon. The dried bark of the plant is found in the market in the form of rolls and quills, which is used for cooking and flavoring. The most common and cheapest type of Cinnamon in the US is made from powdered Cinnamomum burmannii.  It is a traditional medicinal plant that has long been used as a spice, food preservative, and food flavoring. The pharmacological studies have shown anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-thrombotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, dental plaque formation and periodontal disease.

Cinnamon is an aromatic spice which has been used extensively as medicinal purpose and for seasoning for many dishes. This spice has a unique characteristic with its dark brown or red brown color. Indonesian Cinnamon or Korintje Cinnamon is classified as one of the Cassia cinnamon. From its name, you already know that this Cinnamon is originated from Indonesia. A 2013 study "Inhibitory effects of Cinnamomum burmannii Blume stem bark extract and trans-cinnamaldehyde on nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells; synergism with cisplatin" published in Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine by Maelinda Daker, Voon Yee Lin, Gabriel Akyirem Akowuah, Mun Fei Yam, Mariam Ahmad  investigated the effects of methanol extract stem bark and its main constituent, TCA, on human NPC cell lines. TCA showed an ability to scavenge nitric oxide. The combination of TCA and cisplatin produced synergistic anti-proliferative effects. Results suggested a potential use of TCA for the treatment of NPC.

Breast Cancer:

A 2013 study "Synergistic effects of Cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamonum burmanii) and doxorbubicin on T47D cells correlated with apoptosis induction" published in Indonesian Journal of Cancer Chemoprevention Vol 4, No 1 by Etyk Yunita Anjarsari, Nita Kristina, Yonika Arum Larasati, Dyaningtyas Dewi Pamungkas Putri, Edy Meiyanto on breast cancer cells and apoptosis induction evaluated the cytotoxic effect of cinnamon essential oil and its combination with doxorubicin, and its ability to induce apoptosis on T47D breast cancer cells. Results showed CEO exhibited cytotoxic effect on T47D cells with IC50 of 75 µg/ml. The CEO also showed synergistic effect with doxorubicin. CEO alone or in combination with doxorubicin showed apoptosis induction of T47D cells. Results suggest potential for CEO as co-chemotherapeutic agent of doxorubicin on breast cancer.

Results showed the fraction exhibited gastroprotective and antioxidant activity through hydrogen potassium ATP activity inhibition and downregulation of its expression, suggesting a promising agent for the management of dyspepsia and gastric diseases requiring gastroprotection.

Gastric Ulcer:

A 2017 study "The Evaluation of Proton Pump Inhibitor Bioactive Fraction DLBS2411 from Cinnamomum burmannii (Nees & T. Nees) in Animal Model of Gastric Ulceration Healing" published in American Journal of Pharmacology and Toxicology by Floresia Nailufar, Raymond Rubianto Tjandrawinata about gastric ulcer healing, where DLBS2411 is a bioactive fraction from Cinnamonum burmannii believed to have anti-ulcer activity. Study evaluated the fraction in an acetic acid induced gastric ulcer model in rats. DLBS2411 at doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg demonstrated healing activity on acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer, with an effect similar to that of omeprazole 2 mg/kg or sucralfate 100 mg/kg. It also showed a good safety profile in animal.

A 2016 study "Comparison of in vitro antioxidant activity of infusion, extract and fractions of Indonesian Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii) bark" in International Food Research Journal 23 by Ervina, M., Nawu, Y.E. and Esar, S.Y. compared the antioxidant activity of bark infusion, extract, and fractions. Results showed significant differences in antioxidant activity. The cinnamon bark showed the highest antioxidant activity, followed by ethanol extract, water- and EA-fractions with IC50 of 3.03, 8.36, 8.89, and 13.51 µg/ml, respectively. Antioxidant activities were higher than rutin, with IC50 of 15.27 µg/ml. Phytochemical analysis showed polyphenol (tannins, flavonoids) and phenolic volatile oil are the major antioxidant compounds.

Another 2013 study "Antioxidative Activities of Aqueous Extracts of Cinnamomum burmannii Blume Stem" in The Natural Products Journal, Volume 3, Number 4 by A. Akowuah, Gabriel; Ahmad, Mariam; C. Tan, Soo; F. Yam, Mun yielded trans-cinnamaldehyde in 50% aqueous methanol and water extracts at 50.14 µg/mg and 12.83 µg/mg of dry extract, respectively. The extracts exhibited in vitro antioxidative effects with the 50% aqueous methanol extract showing more potency than the water extract.

A 2016 study "Antihyperglycemic Activity of Piper crocatum Leaves and Cinnamomum burmannii Bark Mixture Extract in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats" published in J. Math. Fund. Sci., Vol. 48, No. 2 by Mega Safithri Hasibuan, Sedarnawati Yasni, Maria Bintang and Anna Setiadi Ranti evaluated the antihyperglycemic effect of mixture extracts of P. crocatum leaves and C. burmannii bark in diabetic Sprague Dawley rats at various doses for 16 days. Results showed reduction in blood glucose level and increase in pancreatic ß cells in islets of Langerhans up to 2.2 fold.

Another study "Effect of Cinnamon Tea on Postprandial Glucose Concentration" published in Journal of Diabetes Research Volume 2015 by Maria Alexandra Bernardo, Maria Leonor Silva, Elisabeth Santos, Margarida Maria Moncada, José Brito, Luis Proença, Jaipaul Singh, and Maria Fernanda de Mesquita investigated the effect of cinnamon tea (Cinnamonum burmannii) on postprandial capillary blood glucose level on nondiabetic adults. Results showed cinnamon tea administration slightly decreased postprandial BGL. There was significantly lower postprandial maximum glucose concentration and variation of maximum glucose concentration (p<0.05). Cinnamon tea has a high antioxidant effect due to its polyphenol content.

Diabetes Type 1:

A 2013 study "Beneficial effect of Cinnamomum burmannii in streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetic rats" in Proceedings of The Physiological Society: Neuroendocrinology Abstracts, 37th Congress of IUPS, Birmingham, UK by M. L. Silva, P. Pereira, A. Bernardo, M. Moncada, J. Singh, F. Mesquita investigated the effect of aqueous extract of Cinnamonum burmannii on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetic rats. Results showed no significant effect on either blood lipid profiles or HbA1c in STZ-induced diabetic rats. However the aqueous extract possesses beneficial effects of T1DM rats through improvement in body weight and via its antioxidant properties.

Kills Bacterial Infections:

Cinnamaldehyde and proanthocyanidins found in Cinnamomum burmannii act as natural food preservatives. It inhibits the growth of food-borne bacteria like Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella anatum. Moreover, the bark of this Cinnamon fights against all Streptococcus spp., treating decayed tooth and periodontitis, and is effective as a mouthwash.

A 2019 study "Antibacterial Activity of Cinnamon Extract (Cinnamomum burmannii) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli In Vitro" published in Bioscientia Medicina: Journal of Biomedicine and Translational Research by Nita Parisa, Rahma Nur Islami, Ella Amalia, Mariana Mariana, Riana Sari Puspita Sriwijaya evaluated for antibacterial activity against five common food-borne pathogenic bacteria viz. B. cereus, L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, E. coli and Salmonella anatum. Results showed significant antibacterial activity possibly significantly contributed to by (E)-cinnamaldehyde and proanthocyanidins. (see constituents above) (6) Study showed Cinnamon extract is effective as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Another study "Antimicrobial Activity and Synergic Effect of Cinnamomum burmannii's Essential Oil & its isolated compound (Cinnamaldehyde)" published in International Conference on Chemical, Agricultural and Medical Sciences (CAMS-2013), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by Anis Fadhlina Izyani Binti Awang, Deny Susanti, and Muhammad Taher evaluated the antimicrobial activity of Cinnamomum burmannii essential oil and its major compound, cinnamaldehyde against selected microorganisms and evaluated the synergic effect of essential oil and cinnamaldehyde in combination with antibiotics. Results showed cinnamaldehyde alone was effective in inhibiting the growth of microorganisms and presents a potential alternative for combating emergence of antibiotic resistance. Study clarified the crucial role of cinnamaldehyde as the sole potent antimicrobial compound of the Cinnamomum burmannii's essential oil.

A 2016 study published in Dental Journal, Vol 49, No 2 by Muhammad Luthfi, Indah Listiana Kriswandini, Fitriah Hasan Zaba about synergistic effect of Cinnamonum burmannii, V. unguiculata and C. papaya against Candida albicans biofilm degradation. Study evaluated the combination of C. burmannii, Vigna unguiculata and Papain from Carica papaya on inhibition of Candida albicans biofilms degradation. Results showed the combination of Cinnamonum burmannii and V. unguiculata exhibited adequate inhibitory effects equal to 60.75% inhibition. This increased after Papain from Carica papaya latex was added. Study showed Cinnamonum, V. unguiculata, and Papain extracts showed optimum synergic inhibition of C. albicans biofilm.

Staphylococcus aureus:

A 2015 study "Effect of Cinnamomum burmannii Nees ex Bl. and Massoia aromatica Becc. Essential Oils on Planktonic Growth and Biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus In Vitro" published in International Journal of Applied Research in Natural Products, Vol 8, No 2 by Sylvia Utami Tunjung Pratiwi, Ellen Louise Lagendijk, Sandra de Weert, Triana Hertiani, Rinaldi Idroes, Cornellius AMJJ Van Den Hondel showed the essential oils of Cinnamonum burmannii and M. aromatica are an interesting source for antibiofilm agents in the development of new strategies to treat infections caused by Pseudomnas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus biofilm.

Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (DPT):

A 2014 study "Antipyretic Effect of Cinnamomum burmannii (Nees & T.Nees) Blume Infusion in Fever-induced Rat Models" published in Althea Medical Journal by Qatrunnada Zainol, Eva M. Hidayat, Stanza Uga Peryoga evaluated the antipyretic effect of Cinnamomum burmannii infusion using Diphtheria Tetanus Pertussis (DPT) vaccine-induced fever in 28 male Wistar rats. Results showed an antipyretic effect of 6% and 12% C. burmannii infusion in fever-induced rat models in the first 30 minutes.


Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV):

Though detailed research is needed, but there are some signs that Indonesian Cinnamon would be very beneficial to treat against HIV. Earlier research concluded that Cinnamon could block the type-1 HIV from infecting the body cells and also, it can prevent the growth of HIV into AIDS. But, you need to take a notice that you shouldn’t use this herbal spice as the only medication for HIV. It would be very good if you use it together with other medicaions.

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV):

A study "Antiviral potential of cinnamon oil from Cinnamomum iners Reinw. ex Blume and Cinnamomum burmannii Blume against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus" published in 1st National Graduate Research Conference and Creative Innovation Competition by D. J. M. Fabros1, W. Charerntantanakul, W. Ruansit and U. Kankeaw evaluated the antiviral effect of cinnamaldehyde from the essential oil of Cinnamomum iners and Cinnamomum burmannii against PRRSV grown in MARC-145 cells. On pre-infection entry of virus, cinnamaldehyde 1 (Cinnamomum iners) showed low to moderate anti-PRRSV effect, while 0.2 ng/ml cinnamaldehyde 2 (Cinnamomum burmannii) showed only 21% inhibition in pre-infection of virus. The natural occurring trans-cinnamaldehyde from essential oil has low antiviral property along against viruses, but efficacy can be increased when synthesized with derivatives and carrier.

Liver Health:


A 2019 study "The anti-inflammatory influence of Cinnamomum burmannii against multi-walled carbon nanotube-induced liver injury in rats" published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research by Khaled Abbas Helmy Abdou, Rasha Rashad Ahmed, Doaa Ramadan I Abdel-Gaward about Carbon Nanotube (CNT)-Induced Liver Injury: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are are used extensively in nanotechnology. CNTs have been implicated in many disorders associated with human health. Study provides insight into the role of aqueous Cinnamonum burmannii in treating possible hepatotoxic effects of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) exposure in 32 male albino rats. Oral administration of aqueous Cinnamonum burmannii to MWCNT-treated rats resulted in significant reduction in LPO and total thiol-contents. There was significant downregulation in rate of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
