The Coriander is essentially a soft plant, at a height of 50 meters. The Coriander belongs to Apiaceous family, popularly referred to as the Umbelliferae. This family has many other well-known plants like Celery, Parsley, Cumin and Carrot. Unlike the members of his family, The Coriander are often grown year-round and this makes this herb is widely used round the world, but with origins in the West Asia (India) and Mediterranean. The green stems bear broad leaves which develop into white or pale pink flowers. Upon developing, the fruits are shaped like globules with a brownish tinge. The dried fruits are known as Coriander seeds and are a staple in Indian kitchens. While all parts of this therapeutic herb are edible, only the Coriander leaves and seeds are utilized for innumerable food and medicinal purposes. The Coriander plant is native to many countries across the world, being widely cultivated in Europe, Middle East, Latin American as well as parts of Africa and Asia. In recent times, there has been an emphasis on medicinal plants with potent nutritive values, for use in treating chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity. This has led to the naturalization and propagation of the Coriander plant or Cilantro in several western nations as well, including the warmer regions of North America and Australia.

In the United States, Coriandrum sativum seeds are called Coriander, while its leaves are called Cilantro, where is popularly known by its Spanish name. The Latin term “Coriandrum” was first mentioned by "Pliny the Elder" in his naturalis historia, in reference to the alleged similarity of the smell of unripe fruits and rubbing of leaves with that of a bedbug. In other parts of the world, they’re called Coriander seeds and Coriander leaves. This fab ingredient has different names in different parts of the world, Coriander, Chinese Parsley, Coriandolo, Kusthumbari. Which is a testimony to the fact that it is a global culinary sensation. In India, it is commonly called Dhaniya in Hindi, Malli in Malayalam, Kothimira in Telugu and Kothamalli in Tamil.

Although all plant parts are eatable, leaves and seeds are used most prominently. The leaves, also referred to as Coriander, and therefore the seeds haven’t any resemblance to every other in flavor or taste (the leaves), but both have their health benefits. Coriander leaves are often used whole. The Coriander leaves have a different taste from the seeds, with citrus overtones. In addition to volatile oils, caffeic acid and flavonoid glycosides have been isolated from Coriander leaves. The leaves of the coriander plant are an indispensable part of Indian cooking, be it in soups, salads, rasams, curries, and dals, owing to its vibrant green colour and the pleasant aroma of the sprigs. It is cultivated in the plains of the province of Punjab in Pakistan, as well as in Bangladesh. Some people may be genetically predisposed to find the leaves to have unpleasant soapy taste or a rank smell. The fresh leaves are an ingredient in many South Asian foods (such as chutneys and salads); in Chinese and Thai dishes; in Mexican cooking, particularly in salsa and guacamole and as a garnish; and in salads in Russia. In Portugal, chopped Coriander is used in the bread soup Açorda, and in India, chopped Coriander is a garnish on Indian dishes such as dal. As heat diminishes their flavor, Coriander leaves are often used raw or added to the dish immediately before serving. In Indian and Central Asian recipes, Coriander leaves are used in large amounts and cooked until the flavor diminishes. The leaves spoil quickly when removed from the plant, and lose their aroma when dried or frozen.

The dry Coriander fruits are known as coriander seeds. Coriander seeds, on the other hand, are small, round brown seeds of the plant that are ground into a powder and used to spice curries and sauces. The whole seeds can also be roasted, pounded, and included in meat rubs and marinades. The word Coriander in food preparation may refer solely to these seeds (as a spice), rather than to the plant. Coriander seeds have a lemony citrus flavor when crushed, due the seeds are essential oils and monoterpenoids, such as linalool and pinene. It is described as warm, nutty, spicy, and orange-flavored. Coriander is commonly found both as whole dried seeds and in ground form. Roasting or heating the seeds in a dry pan heightens the flavour, aroma, and pungency. Ground coriander seed loses flavour quickly in storage and is best ground fresh. Coriander seed is a spice in garam masala and Indian curries which often employ the ground fruits in generous amounts together with cumin, acting as a thickener in a mixture called dhana jeera. Roasted coriander seeds, called dhana dal, are eaten as a snack. They are the main ingredient of the two south Indian dishes sambhar and rasam. Outside of Asia, Coriander seed is used widely in the process for pickling vegetables. In Germany and South Africa (see boerewors), the seeds are used while making sausages. In Russia and Central Europe, coriander seed is an occasional ingredient in rye bread (e.g. Borodinsky bread), as an alternative to caraway. Coriander seeds are used in brewing certain styles of beer, particularly some Belgian wheat beers. The Coriander seeds are used with orange peel to add a citrus character. Coriander seed is one of the main traditional ingredients in the South African Boerewors, a popular spiced mixed-meat sausage.

Coriander, also commonly known as Cilantro and Dhaniya is an herb with extensive culinary use especially for garnishing. It is used in the raw form fresh or dried to enhance the taste and add aroma to the food. It has a distinct freshening flavor and leaves behind a lime like aroma in the mouth. It has a distinctive flavor which is a mix of aromatic, slightly peppery and citrus like sweet. It is an important ingredient used in Indian cuisine in the preparation of meat, in salads, beverages and for garnishing of some deserts.

Thanks to the presence of substances such as vitamins, fiber, mineral salts and antioxidants, the plant stimulates the nervous system and functions as a tonic to sooth the sense of tiredness and apathy. Last but not least, it is its chelating action against heavy metals. It is able to remove mercury, cadmium, lead and aluminum in the bones. According to some research, Coriander can be used to treat infections, food poisoning and is also effective against fungi and other microorganisms. Pharmaceutical applications of Coriander have also revealed antibacterial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective and anticonvulsant activities.

Coriander is a herbal plant readily used in cooking and alternative medicine. Nutritionally, the herb is considered to be a good source of lipids and contains linalool, an essential oil. Rich in terpenes and alcohols, Coriander essential oil is known for its carminative, antispastic and digestive virtues. By stimulating the production of gastric juices, it favors the digestive process. It is also used to counteract irritable colon, abdominal swelling, aerophagia, stomach pain, diarrhea and inappetence. Research has found that cooking with Cilantro can prevent the development of heterocyclic amines (HCAs) that arise when meat is cooked at high temperatures. High consumption of HCAs has been linked to an increased risk of cancer.

A great source of vitamins and minerals, Cilantro should be considered a superfood, or at least a superherb. Coriander is rich in vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, dietary minerals and fibers. It contains minerals like manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium and selenium. The essential oils present in the herb are known to stunt bacterial production and multiplication. Rich in ascorbic acid and 11 types of essential oils that render antirheumatic and antiarthritic properties to coriander, the herb on a whole is packed with nutritional benefits. A wonder herb consisting of 11 essential oils, very low in saturated fat, contains a good amount of linoleic acid which imparts numerous health benefits. As per NIN, 100 gms of coriander leaves has 31 kcal, 2 gms of carbohydrates, 4gms of protein, 0.7 gms of fat, 146 mg of calcium, 5.3mg of iron, 4.7gms of fibre, 24mg of Vitamin C, 635mg of Vitamin A and more. A quarter cup of raw Cilantro leaves provides 16% of the daily value (DV) of vitamin K, which supports bone health and helps wounds heal. It also offers 5% DV of vitamin A and 2% DV of vitamin C, two vitamins responsible for immune function. Plus, said serving size adds less than one calorie to your meal.

Supports Cardiovascular Health - Heart Health:

Coriander leaves and seeds have a strong anti-sodium content, which is why it is recognized by various researchers as an excellent medicine and spice. Some animal and test-tube studies suggest that coriander may lower heart disease risk factors, such as high blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels. The study found that rats given Coriander seeds experienced a significant decrease in LDL (bad) cholesterol and an increase in HDL (good) cholesterol.

Coriander extract appears to act as a diuretic, helping your body flush excess sodium and water. This may lower your blood pressure. Eating pungent herbs and spices like Coriander helps them reduce their sodium intake, which may improve heart health.

Another 2022 review published in Molecules found the herb may have cardiovascular benefits, such as regulating blood pressure and heart rhythm. The researchers theorize that this is due to Cilantro's high antioxidant content.

However, of the 18 studies the review assessed, only two were conducted in humans. Therefore, you shouldn't expect munching on Cilantro to ease any cardiovascular issues; a lot more research needs to be done.

High Blood Pressure:

A research in The Journal of Ethnopharmacology suggests that Coriander may positively help lower blood pressure. By enhancing the interaction of calcium ions and acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the peripheral and central nervous system relaxes blood vessel tension, thereby reducing the chances of several cardiovascular conditions, including heart attacks and strokes.

Cholesterol Levels:

In today’s lifestyle, every third person is suffering from high cholesterol problems. The acids present in Coriander, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), oleic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid and linoleic acid are known to be highly efficient in reducing the cholesterol levels of the body. It ensures that there is no cholesterol deposition along the walls of arteries and veins that could lead to chronic problems like heart attack, strokes and artherosclerosis. At the same time, Coriander enables a rise in levels of healthy cholesterol that prevent the body from of serious health conditions.

One of the reasons that Coriander (Cilantro) may be effective against cardiovascular disease is that it helps keep arteries free of fatty deposits and plaque that build up when low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol molecules are oxidized by free radicals. LDL cholesterol is known as the “bad” cholesterol. Free radicals wreak havoc in the body as they try to steal electrons from molecules in healthy cells (often damaging the DNA of these cells in the process). They are linked to accelerated aging and disease. Coriander is high in the flavonoid quercetin, which slows the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and potentially protects artery walls from damage as well. Flavonoids are a group of highly medicinal compounds found in certain plant-based foods. Regular consumption of Coriander leaves may help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and improve HDL (good) cholesterol. According to research, if someone has a complaint of high cholesterol, he should boil Coriander seeds and drink that water.

A study on Coriandrum sativum hypocholeterolemic effects suggests it may be due to the increased activity of plasma LCAT and enhanced degradation of cholesterol to bile acids and neutral sterols.

According to The Journal of Environmental Biology, Coriander also can help reduce the level of bad LDL cholesterol deposition along the inner walls of the arteries and veins. LDL cholesterol leads to serious cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, atherosclerosis, and strokes. More importantly, this herb could also help raise the levels of good or HDL cholesterol, which works as a preventative line of defense against some dangerous conditions.

Hypolipidemic:

A 2011 study "Antilipidemic activity of Coriandrum sativum" published in Bioscience Research by S. Kousar, N. Jahan, Khalil-ur-Rehman and S. Nosheen evaluated the antilipidemic effect of fresh leaves of Coriandrum sativum against salbutamol induced cardiac injury in rabbits. Salbutamol-treated rabbits (50mg/kg) showed elevated lipids (LDL, triglycerides) and decreased HDL-cholesterol and antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT). Treatment showed a significant antilipidemic effect against salbutamol-induced myocardial infarction as evidenced by lowering of LDL, triglycerides, peroxidase and increased level of HDL-C and antioxidant enzymes.

A 2008 study "The Effect of Feeding Coriandrum sativum Fruits Powder on the Plasma Lipids Profile in Cholesterol Fed Rats" published in Research Journal of Animal and Veterinary Sciences by Suliman S H et al. evaluated the effect of feeding Coriandrum sativum fruits powder on the plasma lipids profile in cholesterol fed rats. Results showed a significant decrease in lipid profile in when given an 8% fruit powder mixed diet for one month. The study showed Coriander seed oil have hypocholesterolemic properties in rats fed a cholesterol-rich diet.

Heart Failure:

A 2018 study "Effects of Coriandrum Sativum Extract and Simvastatin in Isopreterenol Induced Heart Failure in Rats" published in Ser JExp Clin Res. by Aisha Siddiqi, Adila Parveen, Heha Dyani, M Ejaz Hussain, and Mohammad Fahim investigated the cardioprotective effect of Coriandrum sativum in a rat model of isoproterenol induced heart failure. Treatment of heart failure rats with Coriandrum sativum improved the altered hemodynamics, restored cardiac antioxidant enzymes armory, attenuated oxidative stress, improved lipid profile, lowered atherogenic indices, decreased levels of ETa and ETb receptor mRNA and protein, and restored cardiac morphology. Results suggest Coriandrum sativum is cardioprotedtive in heart failure, possibly via alleviation of oxidative stress, improvement of lipid profile, and endothelial dysfunction.

Atherosclerosis:

A 2013 study "Coriandrum sativom L. seed extract mitigates lipotoxicity changes in rats" published in EXCLI Journal by Dipak Patel, Swati Desai, Tejal Gajaria, Ranjitsinh Devkar, A.V. Ramachandran evaluated the efficacy of Coriandrum sativum in preventing in vitro LDL oxidation mediated macrophage modification and alleviation of pathophysiologic alterations of high cholesterol diet induced atherosclerosis in rats. There was lowered lipid profile following Coriandrum sativum treatment. Results showed the Coriandrum sativum extract has potential of mitigating in vivo induction of experimental atherosclerosis.

Kills Bacterial Infections:

Apart from doing all the good to your body, Cilantro and Coriander seeds have antibacterial and antifungal properties. Thanks to the bioactive compounds, cilantro can also kill parasites in your body (anthelmintic). This property is exploited not only in medicine but is also applied to food preservation and preventing spoilage. That means you can store meat, fish, grain, vegetables, etc. with some coriander seeds or suitable extracts for extended periods. The diluted essential oil can also be used topically (applied to the skin) to treat minor skin infections, and it contains compounds called aldehydes that are effective against yeasts, salmonella and other bacteria.

A 2018 study "Antibacterial Efficacy and Cluster Analysis of Genotypic Extracts of Coriander Leaves and Seeds against Human Pathogenic Bacterial Strains" published in  Int. J. Curr. Microbiol. App. Sci. by Ankita Verma, Deepali Agarwal, Jyotsna Dhanik, Neelam Arya and Viveka Nand screened methanolic extracts of leaves and seeds genotypes against four human pathogenic bacterial strains i.e., E. coli, B. subtilis, P. aeruginosa, and S. typhi. All ME of leaves and seeds showed inhibitory effect against tested bacteria E. coli, S. typhi and B. subtilis, with no activity against P. aeruginosa. The study provides information and platform for the development of effective natural medicines by developing clusters of Coriander genotypes which can serve as a potential natural antibacterial plant for human pathogenic bacterial strains.

A 2011 study "Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) essential oil: its antibacterial activity and mode of action evaluated by flow cytometry" published in Journal Med Microbiol by Filomena Silva, Susana Ferreira et al. evaluated the antibacterial effect of coriander essential oil against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Results showed the oil has an effective antimicrobial activity against all bacteria tested, except for B. cereus and E. faecalis.

Another 2011 study on the combating effect of Coriander oil against 12 bacterial strains were tested in the lab, including Bacillus cereus, E. coli, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Salmonella enteric by Dr. Fernanda Domingues and her team from The University of Beira Interior, Portugal. This study witnessed that 1.6% or less than that quantity of Coriander oil killed or reduced the growth of all the harmful bacteria tested. It also discards parasites in the body.

Dr. Domingues also said that “Coriander oil damages the membrane surrounding the bacterial cell. This disrupts the barrier between the cell and its environment and inhibits essential processes including respiration, which ultimately leads to death of the bacterial cell. ‘It could become a natural alternative to common antibiotics”. She also said that Coriander oil can be used in lotions or oral rinses for treating food poisoning and fighting against multi-drug resistant bacterial infections.

In 2006 "Studies on the dual antioxidant and antibacterial properties of Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) and Cilantro (Coriandrum sativum) extracts" published in Food Chemistry, Volume 97, Issue 3 by Peter Y.Y. Wong, David D. Kitts evaluated the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of methanol and water extracts of freeze-dried and irradiated parsley and cilantro leaves and stems. Methanol leaf extracts exhibited significantly greater radical scavenging activity, attributed to total phenolic content. Ferrous ion-chelating activity was significant greater in the methanol extracts. There was also greater inhibition of B. subtilis and E. coli, corresponding to ferrous sequestering activity of the methanol-derived stem extracts.

Staphylococcus aureus:

A 2012 "Study of the inhibitory effect of the rthanolic extract of Coriandrum sativum, Vitis vinifera and Zingber officinale on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk of cows infected with clinical mastitis" published in Bas. J. Vet. Res. by Massar Ibrahim Shekhan, Jinan Abdul-Amir Sabeeh Al-Hussaini evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial potential of ethanolic extract of three local medicinal plants, Coriandrum sativum, Vitis vinifera and Zingiber officinale against the growth of pathogenic S. sureus isolated from milk of cows infested with clinical mastitis. The ethanolic extract of Coriandrum sativum exhibited the strongest antibacterial effect.

Infections:

Coriander has antimicrobial properties that can be beneficial against infections like foodborne issues due to its plant compounds. Coriander contains antimicrobial compounds that may help fight certain infections and foodborne illnesses and effectively protect the body’s immune system. One of these compounds is called Dodecenal, which may be especially useful against Salmonella infections. Coriander seeds too, have been shown to provide some form of protection in combating urinary tract infections. The oil derived from Coriander can also be added to antimicrobial products to help deal with food-related diseases. Coriander benefits against infections can be enjoyed by either consuming the herb or using a variety of derived products that contain extracts of the Coriander plant.

Antifungal:

Although there are several treatments available for fungal infections, such as thrush, they often cause unpleasant side effects. For this reason, researchers are developing natural compounds that people can use to manage fungal infections.

"Coriandrum sativum L. (Coriander) Essential Oil: Antifungal Activity and Mode of Action on Candida spp., and Molecular Targets Affected in Human Whole-Genome Expression" published in PLOS one by Irlan de Almeida Freires, Ramiro Mendonça Murata , Vivian Fernandes Furletti, Adilson Sartoratto, Severino Matias de Alencar, Glyn Mara Figueira, Janaina Aparecida de Oliveira Rodrigues, Marta Cristina Teixeira Duarte, Pedro Luiz Rosalen on essential oil from leaves inhibited Candida biofilm adherence and decreased the proteolytic activity C. albicans at MIC.

A 2014 study tested the effects of an essential oil derived from the leaves of C. sativum on Candida albicans, which is a yeast that is a common cause of infection in humans. The authors conclude that the oil does indeed have antifungal properties and recommend further studies.

A 2012 study "Antioxidant and antifungal activity of Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) essential oil in cake" published in International Food Research Journal by Darughe, F., Barzegar, M. and Sahari, M.A. yielded main components of camphor (44.99%), cyclohexanol acetate (cis-2-tert-butyl-) (14.45%), limonene (7.17%), and α-pinene (6.37%). Antifungal and antioxidant activities of Coriander essential oil were evaluated in cake. Secondary oxidation products formation in cake and effects were equal to BHA. The antioxidant effects may be due to terpene and terpenoid components. The Coriander essential oil​​​​​​​ at 0.15% could inhibit fungal growth in the cake. Results suggest the essential oil can be used as natural antioxidant and antifungal in foodstuffs especially those that are lipid containing.

Antimicrobial:

Animal studies investigating the health benefits of Cilantro have found the herb to have antimicrobial properties. Complementary research has shown that the use of a Coriander-derived essential oil to treat thrush was successful.

In one study, chicks were given either a water-based Cilantro extract or Cilantro seed powder varying in concentrations. When compared to the control group, those that consumed the aqueous extract and 1.5% and 2% of the powder showed substantially reduced Escherichia coli in the ileal (small intestinal) microflora.

A 2014 study "Preliminary studies on phytochemicals and antimicrobial activity of solvent extracts of Coriandrum sativum L. roots" published in Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry by R. Sasi Kumar, P. Balasubramanian, P. Govindaraj, T. Krishnaveni of ethanol extract of fresh roots exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella and Candida.

Another 2012 study "Antimicrobial Activity of the Extracts from Coriandrum sativum" published in International Journal of Food Nutrition and Safety by Xin-Zhi Cao, Jian-Ming You, Shen-Xin Li, You-Liang Zhang of various solvent plant extracts were tested against bacteria such as E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. aerogenes, B. subtilis, B. cereus, B. megaterium, P. vulgaris, S. typhi, S. typhi A and B and fungus A. niger and Rhizopus. A methanol extract showed to be more effected compared to other solvents like acetone and benzene. Preliminary screening yielded alkaloids, flavanoids, tannins, saponin, terpenoids, carbohydrates, and sterols. Results suggest potential as natural antimicrobial in industrial food and drugs. Freeze-dried coriander was extracted by petroleum ether, 95% ethanol, and water. Only the water extract showed significant antimicrobial activity with MIC below 10% of the original extract. The antibacterial activity of the extracts was stable under heating and showed best antibacterial effects at pH 6 with 2.0% NaCl concentration.

Pratap Rudra reports on the biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles using seed extracts. The synthesized silver nanoparticles exhibited antibacterial activity against human pathogens: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida and Bacillus subtilis.

A 2018 study "Synergistic effect of Coriandrum sativum L. extracts with cefoxitin against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae" published in Medicine Science by Nilay Ildiz, Ayse Baldemir, Ufuk Ince, Selen Ilgun, Yusuf Konca evaluated the possible synergistic interactions of Coriandrum sativum seed extracts and cefoxitin against three important nosocomial pathogens i.e., methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA), extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing E. coli and K. pneumonia. Result showed strong synergistic antibacterial activity of Coriander extracts and cefoxitin combination against ESBL producing K. pneumonia.

A 2014 study "Coriandrum sativum on pain and inflammation" published in International Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Chemistry by Sangeeta P Bhat, Waseem Rizvi and Anil Kumar evaluated the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Coriandrum sativum seeds in Wistar and Swiss albino rat models. Both extracts of seeds showed significant analgesic activity in acetic-acid induced writhing and significant anti-inflammatory activity in Carrageenan-induced paw edema while only high dose aqueous group exhibited significant results with cotton-pellet granuloma model.

Scientists at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi put tradition to the test in 2010 by evaluating the effectiveness of extracts of Coriandrum sativum against arthritis. They found that the extract helped to reduce joint inflammation in the test animals.

Study evaluated Coriandrum sativum ethanol extract (CSE) for protective effects against UVB-induced skin photoaging in normal human dermal fibroblasts in vitro and in skin of hairless mice in vivo. The main component of the CSE was linolenic acid. Results showed CSE-treated mice had thinner epidermal layers and denser dermal collage fibers and lower MMOP-1 levels and higher procollagen type 1 levels than untreated mice. Results suggest potential of Coriandrum sativum to prevent skin photoaging.

Xavier Innocent, M. Syed Ali Fathima and Dhanalakshmi showed Coriandrum sativum exhibited potent immunostimulation with induction of the blood parameters in the experimental fish catla. It suggests a potential as a dietary additive or as an adjuvant to heighten the immune response in fish cultures.

Antiviral:

"In silico Studies on Dongue and Measles viral proteins with selected methanolic extracts of Coriander sativum leaves consistuents" published in World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences 2018 by Aniruddha B.S., Ashwini B. M., Mahesh K., Nagarjun N. and Dr. Balasubramanian Sathyamurthy evaluated the binding efficacy of four compounds present in Coriander sativum with two structural Dengue virus proteins and four structural measles virus proteins through Insilico methods. Results showed the compounds squalene and 9,12 octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z),2-hydroxy,1(hydroxymethyl)ethyl ester, 2,3-hydroxy propyl ester have highest binding affinity with the chosen viral proteins.

Neurological Health:

All extract doses reduced duration, frequency, and amplitude of burst discharges and prolonged the latency of seizure attacks (p<0.05, p<0.01, and p<0.001, respectively). There was also reduction in production of dark neurons and apoptotic cells. Neuroprotective activity was attributed to antioxidant properties. 

A 2012 study "Effects of Coriandrum sativum extracts on glucose/serum deprivation- induced neuronal cell death" published in Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine, Vol. 2, No. 1 by Ahmad Ghorbani, Hassan Rakhshandeh, Elham Asadpour, Hamid Reza Sadeghnia investigated the neuronal protective effect of Coriandrum sativum against glucose/serum deprivation (GSD)-induced cytotoxicity. Results showed Coriandrum sativum bearing water-soluble compounds possess neuroprotective activity.

Convulsions:

A study in rats found that Cilantro extract protected against damage to nerve cells following seizures caused by the drug, possibly due to its antioxidant properties.

A study "Anticonvulsant Effects of Coriandrum Sativum L. Seed Extracts in Mice" published in Faculty of Pharmacy, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran by Hossein Hosseinzadeh and Mohammad Madanifard evaluated the anticonvulsant effect of aqueous and ethanolic Coriandrum seed extracts on MES (maximal electric seizures) and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) tests in male and female albino mice. LD50 values of decoction and maceration extracts were 078 g/kg and 8.11 g/kg, respectively. The aqueous extract was more toxic than the ethanol extract, reasons for the higher toxicity was not clear and further investigation was suggested. Results of study in mice suggest extracts of Coriandrum sativum seeds may have a beneficial anticonvulsant effect in petit mal and grand mal seizures. The mechanism for the anticonvulsant effect was not clear. 

Contemporary studies have found that the consumption of Cilantro may reduce the occurrence of epileptic seizures. Specifically, researchers report cilantro to be a highly potent activator of the voltage-gated potassium channel subfamily Q, referred to as the KCNQ channel.

Dysfunction of the channel can cause brain damage, disease, or malfunction due to an epileptic seizure. This type of dysfunction does not typically respond to current anti-epileptic medication. It is thought that a component of Cilantro, dodecanal, binds to the potassium channel causing them to open and reducing overall excitability of the neuron.

The American Botanic Coucil further mentions the use in Traditional Iranian Medicine of Coriander seeds to treat anxiety and insomnia. The dose of seed powder is 1 g to 5 g, three times a day.

An experimental study "Effects of Coriandrum sativum extract on exploratory behaviour pattern and locomotor activity in mice" published in IJGP, 2012, Vol 6, Issue 2 by SN Harsha, KR Anilakumar evaluated extract of Coriandrum sativum on exploratory behavior pattern and locomotor activity in mice. Results showed the leaf extract exhibited anti-anxiety effect on mice in the elevated plus maze and open field test.

A 2005 study "Coriandrum sativum: evaluation of its anxiolytic effect in the elevated plus-maze" published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology Volume 96, Issue 3 by Masoumeh Emamghoreishi et al. of the aqueous extract of Coriandrum sativum showed anxiolytic effects and may have a potential sedative and muscle relaxant effects.

An experimental study in rats study "Anti-Stress and Anti-Amnesic Effects of Coriandrum sativum Linn (Umbelliferae) Extract" published in Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, February 2012 by Sushruta Koppula and Dong Kug Choi evaluated the anti-stress and anti-amnesic properties of Coriandrum sativum extract in rats. The attenuation of memory deficits induced by scopolamine could be due to its radical scavenging activity. The antioxidant activity provides mechanistic basis in relieving stress by way of combating oxidative damage.

Oxidative Stress:

Oxidative stress is linked to a wide array of degenerative diseases, including some types of cancer, heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, macular degeneration and much more. This herb’s strong antioxidant properties, in part due to the flavonoid quercetin, helps protect against the damage caused by free radicals in the body. A recent in vitro study found that Coriandrum sativum actually protects against oxidative stress, thanks to its high content of antioxidants.

Depression:

A study "Neurological Assessment of Seeds of Coriandrum sativum by Using Antidepressant and Anxiolytic like Activity on Albino Mice" published in Inventi Impact: Ethnopharmacology, Vol. 2015, Issue 3 by Aslam Pathan, Abdulrahman Alshahrani, Feras Al-Marshad evaluated the antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of seeds of Coriandrum sativum ethanolic extract in mice%). Results showed antidepressant activity in forced swim test by significant decrease in immobility time 70.96% and anxiolytic activity using locomotor activity by significant decrease in locomotion 59.64%. Results support the traditional use of seeds as antidepressant and anxiolytic medicinal plant.

Another 2011 study "Study of antidepressant like effect of Corriandrum sativum and involment of monoaminonergic gabanergic system" published in International Journal of Research in Ayurveda and Pharmacy by Kharade Sudha, Gumate Deepak, Kokane Sushant, Patil Vipul and Naikwade Nilofer evaluated an aqueous extract of seed for antidepressant-like mechanism in mice. Results showed an anti-depressant like effect, possibly related to the increase in noradrenaline and serotonin levels in the hippocampus and frontal cortex.

Enhances Mood:

Due to the adverse side effects of benzodiazepines to manage anxiety, researchers have investigated the anxiolytic effects of coriander seed extract in mice.

In one study, the extract’s ability to reduce anxiety was comparable to that of prescription medication. The extract also produced muscle relaxant and sedative effects.

A study "The effect of Coriandrum sativum seed extract on the learning of newborn mice by electric shock: interaction with caffeine and diazepam" published in Psychology Research and Behavior Management - Dovepress by Seyed Sadegh Zargar-Nattaj, Pooya Tayyebi, Vahid Zangoori, et al. evaluated the effect of Coriandrum sativum seed extract on second-generation mice. Results showed Coriander does not improve learning within a short period of time after training; however, learning after coriander administration can be improved in the long term.

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases:

Studies shows a cause-and-effect link between cigarette smoking and cognitive impairment. Diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s are thought to be associated with two things: chronic inflammation and oxidative damage. Amazingly, evidence suggests that Cilantro can protect your brain from both. First, it contains many antioxidants, including vitamins and the flavonoid quercetin, that are protective against oxidative stress. Second, research shows that diets high in spices such as Turmeric, Clove, Ginger, Garlic, and Cilantro significantly reduce chronic inflammation.

Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s are neurological diseases that can affect brain cells in particular and are associated with inflammation. Against Neurodegenerative Disorders and Alzheimer's disease Induced by Aluminum Chloride in Cerebral Cortex of Male Albino Rats" published in Nature and Science by Enas, A. Khalil about neuroprotective against neurodegenerative disorders and induced Alzheimers, Coriander seed aqueous extract showed protection and improvement on cerebral cortex pyramidal cells against neurodegenerative disorders and Alzheimer's disease induced by aluminum chloride treatment.

Another 2010 study "Reversal of memory deficits by Coriandrum sativum leaves in mice" published in J Sci Food Agric. by Mani V, Parle M, Ramasamy K, Abdul Majeed AB. evaluated the effects of fresh Coriandrum sativum leaves on cognitive functions, total cholesterol and brain cholinesterase activity in mice. Coriandrum sativum leaves produced a dose-dependent improvement in memory scores in young and aged mice, with interesting reductions in total cholesterol and brain cholinesterase activity. Results suggest a potential useful remedy in the management of Alzheimer's disease.

Indigestion:

Coriander oil has carminative, stomachic and digestive properties that stimulate the process of metabolism and influence proper secretion of bile, gastric juices and other acids responsible for trouble-free digestion. This oil improves digestion by regulating pitta dosha, which is responsible for digestion and other metabolic functions. It helps in relieving gas built-up in the stomach and intestines and it also prevents the formation of gas. An English Herbalist John Gerard wrote, “Coriander seeds well prepared and covered with sugar as comfits, taken after meat, helpeth digestion”.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):

Coriander acts like antispasmodic drug which helps to relax contracted digestive muscles which cause discomfort of IBS and other problematic gut problems. Studies evaluated the Coriander preparation lowered severity and frequency of abdominal pain as well as discomfort. Coriander seeds contain antioxidant properties as well as dietary fiber which support healthy function of liver and also facilitate bowel movements. It assists in generation of digestive compounds and facilitates digestion. Add Coriander seeds to the diet by those who experience indigestion.

One 8-week study in 32 people (two groups) with IBS found that 30 drops of a Coriander-containing herbal medication taken thrice daily significantly decreased abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort, compared with a placebo group. The volatile essential oils extracted from Coriander seeds regulate the different state of the body and promote peristaltic and digestive motility. Finally, the results showed that the swelling, discomfort, and abdominal pain in IBS patients who ingested coriander juice were significantly reduced.

Inflamatory Bowel Disease (IBD):

Coriander oral extracts and essential oil have shown potential in treating colon inflammation. Research shows that the herb has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. This may make it a good candidate for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) prevention of therapy.

Acetic Acid-Induced Acute Colitis:

A 2016 study "Effect of Coriandrum sativum hydroalcoholic extract and its essential oil on acetic acid- induced acute colitis in rats" published in Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine by Bahareh Heidari, Seyed Ebrahim Saijadi, Mohsen Minaiyan of fruits and essential oil, evaluated the protective effects of Coriandrum sativum on acetic acid-induced colitis in rats. Evaluation included histopathological examination and measurement of MPO (myeloperoxidase) activity. Results showed alleviation of colitis with treatment of oral extract and essential oil. Effect could be due to both absorption of active ingredients and/or effect of non-absorbable materials on colitis after reaching the colon.

Gastric Ulcer:

A 2012 study "Role of Coriandrum Sativum in Gastric Ulcer" published in Paperback by Shagufta Nikhat evaluated the anti-ulcerogenic effect of Coriandrum sativum in experimental animals. Results showed anti-ulcer activity against stress and aspirin-induced ulcer, the effect probably mediated through an anti-stress mechanism, and as effective as the standard ranitidine.

Appetite Stimulation:

A 2012 study "The effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Coriandrum sativum on rat appetite" published in Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine Received by Habibollah Esmaily et al. evaluated the effect of Coriandrum sativum hydroalcoholic extract on food intake in male Wistar rats. Results showed coriander had positive effects on appetite in rats.

Dietary Supplementation:

A 2014 study "Dietary Supplementation with Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) Seed: Effect on Growth Performance, Circulating Metabolic Substrates, and Lipid Profile of the Liver and Visceral Adipose Tissue in Healthy Female Rats" published in Int. J. Agric. Biol., Vol. 16, No. 1 by Trevor Nyakudya, Siyanda Makaula, Nompilo Mkumla and Kennedy Erlwanger evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with Coriander seeds on growth performance, hepatic and visceral adipose tissue storage and circulating metabolic substrates in healthy growing rats. While there was no effect on liver lipid content, there was a significant increase in the amount of monosaturated and polysaturated fatty acids in visceral adipose tissue with decreased saturated fatty acid content. There was also increased omega3:omega6 ratio in visceral adipose tissue.

Food Poisoning:

According to the 2009 and 2010 report by the Food Standards Agency, about 1 million people in the UK are suffering from food poisoning, contributing to 500 deaths and around 20,000 cases requiring medical care. Recent researches have proved that the use of Coriander oil helps in fighting against harmful bacteria causing food poisoning and other infections in the stomach and intestines.

Research published in The International Journal of Food Microbiology studied Dill, Coriander and Eucalyptus and found that Cilantro was particularly effective in fighting listeria monocytogenes, a specific strain of bacteria that causes listeriosis. It is a bacteria that often causes what we know as food poisoning.

Diarrhea:

Consumption of Coriander on a regular basis helps in proper bowel movement and it adds bulk to our stomach, which helps to prevent diarrhea due to the presence of essential oils in coriander, such as borneol and linalool. Apart for this coriander also has cineole, limonene, beta-phelandrene and alpha-pinene, it has anti-bacterial properties, which is very beneficial in curing diarrhea caused by fungal and microbial action. The essential oils found in Coriander contain components, such as borneol and linalool, which may aid in digestion, proper functioning of the liver, and bonding of bowels.

A study published in Ethnobotanical Leaflets says it can alo be helpful in relieving diarrhea caused by microbial and fungal actions since components like cineole, borneol, limonene, alpha-pinene, and beta-phellandrene all have antibacterial effects.

Coriander leaves are used to make chutneys as well as a garnish. The herb is also increasingly popular as an at-home treatment for the prevention of nausea, vomiting, and stomach disorders.

Cilantro is a member of the Umbelliferae plant family, which also includes carrots. Beta-carotene and lutein, which are found in Cilantro and other Umbelliferae family members, are both carotenoids well known for their antioxidant characteristics. Limited availability of healthy food options can contribute to poor health outcomes.

Beyond its vitamin value, Cilantro also offers up important compounds called antioxidants. They assist to market better health. Antioxidants are molecules that restrict the oxidation of other molecules within the body. they assist within the prevention of risks associated with the guts.

"Effects of Temperature and Storage Duration on Antioxidant Status  in Coriandrum Sativum Linn" published in Int. J. Life. Sci. Scienti. Res. 3 by Ria William D’Souza, Vijaya Lobo evaluated the effect of storage temperature and duration on antioxidant status of Coriandrum sativum. Results showed the overall antioxidant status of the plant decreases considerably during storage condition. Study suggests that as storage period increases the level of enzymatic antioxidants increase with increase in the degree of damage whereas the non-enzymatic antioxidants decrease and concludes that overall antioxidant status of the plant decreases considerably during storage conditions.

Research has found that a positive relationship between antioxidant activity and the phenolic content of Cilantro extracts. Additionally, the leaves of the herb offered greater antioxidant activity compared to the seeds. Based on this, increased dietary consumption of Cilantro may act as a barrier against unwanted oxidation. Similar research has found that carotenoids can reduce the likelihood of developing a range of conditions such as eye disease and specific cancers.

According to a 2022 review published in The Journal Molecules, while Cilantro has many types of antioxidants, one class, known as polyphenols, is particularly important. Polyphenols reduce inflammation and prevent cell damage that may have otherwise contributed to premature aging and heightened disease risk.

A 2017 "Study on phytochemicals, total phenols, antioxidant, anthelmintic activity of hot water extracts of Coriadrum sativum seeds" published in World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Volume 6, Issue 8 by Manju Madhavan and Sheeja T Tharakan evaluated the phytochemical profile, phenol content, antioxidant and anthelmintic activity of hot water extract of seeds of Coriandrum sativum. Radical scavenging potential showed dose dependent increase on increasing concentration of coriander seed extract 1-5 µg. IC50 of Coriandrum sativum seeds was 3.78 µg/m. Anthelmintic activity as dose dependent; at highest concentration of 74 mg/mg, it was almost comparable to Albendazole.

Another 2014 study "Antioxidant profile of Coriandrum sativum methanolic extract" published in International Research Journal of Pharmacy by Dua Anita, Agrawal Sharad, Kaur Amanjot, Mahajan Ritu on a methanolic extract of Coriandrum sativum seeds was evaluated for the presence of antioxidants and in vitro antioxidant potential. HPLC analysis of the polyphenolic-rich extract (18.696 ± 0.12 mg/g dry seeds) identified gallic acid (173.656 µg), caffeic acid (80.185 µg), ellagic acid (162.861 µg), quercetin (608.903 µg) and kaempferol (233.70 µg)/g seeds. Coriander showed excellent free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 0.5 mg dry seed weight. Metal ion chelating assay showed comparatively higher IC 50 (7.2-8.0 mg dry seed weight). The polyphenols including gallic acid, caffeic acid, ellagic acid, quercetin and kaempferol are the principle components responsible for the high antioxidant activity of the seeds.

In a 2010 study "Dose dependent antioxidant activity of fresh juice of leaves of Coriandrum sativum" published in Journal of Pharmacy Research by Panjwani D et al. was demonstrated the potential antioxidant activity of the fresh juice of Coriandrum sativum. The presence of flavonoids confirms it antioxidant activity.

Free Radicals:

Coriander offers several antioxidants that prevent cell damage caused by free radicals. Its antioxidants have been shown to fight inflammation in your body. These compounds include terpinene, quercetin, and tocopherols, which may have anticancer, immune, and neuroprotective effects, according to test-tube and animal studies.

A test-tube study found antioxidants in Coriander seed extract reduce inflammation and slow the growth of lung, prostate, breast and colon cancer cells. Cilantro is full of antioxidants which have immune, anticancer and anti-inflammatory, which may have beneficial effects on neuropathy.

A 2010 study "Comparative Antioxidant Activity Study of Some Commonly Used Spices in Bangladesh" published in Pak. J. Biol. Sci., 13 by S. Sultana et al. on the free radical scavenging activity of the methanolic extracts of several plants showed Coriandrum sativum to have an IC50 of 58.36. 

Relieves Pain and Cramps:

Cilantro seeds possess analgesic activity. They reduce pain by acting on the central pain receptors. Linalool is the active compound that gives cilantro this property. A growing body of evidence suggests that Coriandrum sativum may be useful as a remedy for pain and inflammation.

A study included 68 people that experienced frequent migraine headaches. The authors asked participants in one group to take 15 ml of Coriander fruit syrup in combination with a traditional migraine medication three times a day for 1 month. A control group took conventional migraine medication only. The group taking the combination treatment experienced a reduced severity, duration, and frequency of migraines compared to the control group.

A 2016 study "Analgesic activity of mathanol extract of Coriandrum sativum Linn Fruit" published in World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmautecical Sciences by M. Padmaa Paarakh, Jai Kumar S. and Rupesh M. evaluated the analgesic activity of a 75% methanol fruit extract of Coriandrum sativum using Eddy's hot plate method and tail flick method. Hot plate study showed 100 mg/kg was very effective compared to 200 and 400 mg/kg extract. Tail flick method showed a better effect with 400 mg/kg compared to 100 and 200 mg/kg extract.

A study, published in 2015, investigated the pain relief potential of Coriandrum sativum in mice. The researchers found that extracts of Coriander seeds produced a significant analgesic effect. The study authors noted that naloxone blocked the pain relief effect of Coriandrum sativum. Naloxone is a drug that blocks the effects of opioid pain medications. As a result, the researchers concluded that Coriandrum sativum supports pain relief through the opioid system.

Another 2014 study "Dose-dependent effect of Coriandrum sativum Linn. seeds on thermal pain stimulus" published in JPHYTO by Sangeeta P Bhat, Waseem Rizvi, Anil Kumar evaluated the analgesic activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Coriandrum sativum seeds by thermal pain stimuli in wistar albino rats. Both extracts exhibited and dose-dependent analgesic activity.

Migraine:

A 2017 study "Study of coriandrum sativum syrup on migraine and its effects: A Case study in North Indian district" published in Abstracts:Journal of the Neurological Sciences by V. Kumar, S. Sinha of Coriandrum sativum syrup decreased the duration, severity, and frequency of migraine in 74 migraineurs selected through the international headache society diagnostic criteria. The mean migraine duration, severity and frequency in the intervention group were 6.2 hours, 3.82 units, and about 50% less than the control group, respectively.

Another 2016 randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial "Effects of Coriandrum sativum Syrup on Migraine" published in Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal by Hosein Delavar Kasmaei, Zahra Ghorbanifar, Farid Zayeri, Bagher Minaei, Seyed Hamid Kamali, Hossein Rezaeizadeh, Gholamreza Amin, Ali Ghobadi and  Zohreh Mirzaei evaluated the effects of Coriandrum sativum syrup on duration, severity, and frequency of migraine in 68 migraineurs. Results showed Coriandrum sativum fruit is efficient in reduction of the duration and frequency of migraine attacks and in diminishing pain degree.

Arthritis:

A 2012 study "Evaluation of disease modifying activity of Coriandrum sativum in experimental models" published in Indian J Med Res by Vinod Nair, Surender Singh and Y.K. Gupta evaluated the antiarthritic activity of a hydroalcoholic extract of Coriandrum sativum in adult Wistar rats in experimental models, viz. formaldehyde and Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis. Results showed a dose-dependent inhibition of joint swelling in both models. The antiarthritic activity might be attributed to the modulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the synovium. Results suggest a potential for a disease modifying agent in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Another 2012 study "Antioxidant and antiarthritic potential of Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) leaves" published in Clinical Nutrition (Espen) by C U Rajeshwari, S Siri, B Andallu evaluated the antioxidant and antiarthritic activities of Coriander leaves in osteoarthritic patients. Coriander leaves significantly influenced almost all the parameters in arthritic patients without any detrimental effects. The antioxidant and antiarthritic effects exhibited by the leaves were attributed to the synergistic action of bioactive compounds in the leaves.

Muscle Relaxant:

In an evaluation of its anxiolytic effect in the elevated plus-maze, results suggest that the Coriandrum sativum has anxiolytic effect and a potential for sedative and muscle relaxant effects.

Treats Sleep Disorders:

Coriander has calming properties. It reduces stress, anxiety and induces relaxation thus helping get a calm and peaceful sleep.

Diabetes:

Many consider the use of herbs such as Cilantro to be beneficial in managing conditions such as diabetes. There is a growing body of preclinical literature that supports these claims. Diabetes has become a common health problem. Some practices have claimed that daily use of Coriander seeds helps to normalize blood sugar. The studies have shown that extracts from Coriander seeds contains certain compounds which when discharged into blood caused anti-hyperglycaemic, insulin discharging which held the glucose level within proper limits. Coriander is a natural aid to cure diabetes and lower blood sugar, so add Coriander to the diet. Animal studies have shown that it assist stimulation of insulin and reduce blood sugar. It improves carbohydrate metabolism and promote hypoglycemic activities. It enhances secretion of insulin from pancreas and exhibits insulin like activities at cellular level.

Coriander leaves are good for diabetes patients using them can arouse insulin secretion and minor the blood sugar levels. The leaves have dietary fibre which supports regulating blood sugar levels. A 2017 study "In Silico Antidiabetic Activity of Linalool Isolated From Coriandrum Sativum Linn Fruit" published in International Journal of Cancer & Cellular Biology Research by M Padmaa Paarakh evaluated the molecular interaction of linalool in Coriandrum sativum and targeted protein related to T2DM. Docking studies of linalool with target protein showed it is a promising candidate which docks well with the target related to diabetes mellitus. Results suggest linalool has potential for development into a potent antidiabetic drug.

Another 2017 histopathological study "To Evaluate the Antidiabetic and Rejuvenating Capability of Tissues on Alloxan Induced Diabetic Rats under the Effect of Ethanolic Leaf Extract of Coriandrum sativum" published in Pharmacognosy Journal by Bhaskar Sharma, Gaurav Sharma, Suresh Chand Joshi, Sunil Kumar Singh evaluated the antidiabetic and rejuvenating capability of tissues on alloxan induced diabetic rats under the effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Coriandrum sativum. In acute toxicity study, ethanolic leaf extract was non toxic at 2,000 mg/kg in rats. Results showed Coriandrum sativum possessed significant antidiabetic and rejuvenating capacity of tissues as evidenced by increase in insulin level, albumin, protein level, decreased blood glucose and other biochemical parameters level.

In a 2016 review "Possible Benefits of the Coriandrum sativum in the Management of Diabetes in Animal Model" published in Systematic Review Herb Med. by Frederico EHFF, Cardoso ALBD, Guimarães CAS, Neves RF, Sá-Caputo DC, Moreira-Marconi E, Dionello CF, Morel D, Paineiras-Domingos LL, Costa-Cavalcanti RG, Sousa-Gonçalves CR, Arnóbio A and Bernardo-Filho M was reviewed the published research on the use of Coriander in the treatment of diabetes mellitus in animal models using a database. It concludes suggesting that the use of coriander could be decreased plasma glucose levels of diabetic animals. It also cautions on the limited number of publications in PubMed evaluating the antidiabetic effect of Coriander.

In a 1999 study "Insulin-releasing and insulin-like activity of the traditional anti-diabetic plant Coriandrum sativum" published in British Journal of Nutrition, Cambridge University Press by Allison Gray and Peter Flatt incorporated the aqueous extract of Coriander into the diet and drinking water showed reduced hyperglycemia in streptozotocin-diabetic mice. Because of its effects on components of the metabolic syndrome, it is postulated the extract has cardiovascular protective effect.

"The Protective Effects of Hydro-Alcoholic Extract of Coriandrum sativum in Rats with Experimental Iron-Overload Condition" published in Nat Pharm Prod by Rahman Talaei, Alireza Kheirollah, Hossein Babaahmadi Rezaei, Esrafil Mansouri, and Ghorban Mohammadzadeh evaluated the in-vivo ameliorating effect of an ethanolic extract of Coriandrum sativum on hepatic damage in rats with experimental iron overload. Results showed significantly increased serum iron and ferritin concentration in iron overload group. Treatment with Coriandrum sativum extract significant decreased iron and ferritin concentration (p<0.05). Histopathological evaluation showed Coriandrum sativum extract treatment significant decreased biochemical parameters (ALT, AST, ALP, LDH and CPK), improved tissue damage, and decrease iron accumulation in the liver compared to the iron overload group (p<0.05). Results showed the hydroalcoholic extract of Coriandrum sativum has iron-chelating and liver protective effects similar to deferoxamine against experimental iron overload condition in rats.

Coriander essential oil has diuretic, analgesic, depurative and antioxidant properties that assists in eliminating harmful toxic substances or ama from the body along with excess salts, uric acids and cholesterol in the blood by promoting the frequency and quality of urination. In this study it was demonstrated that when cilantro tablets were used in conjunction with antibiotic treatment "the last traces of the infections and clinical symptoms disappeared completely".

The following year, another study by Dr. Omura and his team revealed that oral intake of Cilantro tablets at a dose of 100 mg each four times a day (for an average weight adult) before and after dental amalgam filling removal significantly enhanced mercury excretion after a preceding 2-week period.
