With the scientific name of Bacopa monnieri, this tropical, perennial, non-aromatic creeping herb has been admired in Ayurvedic and traditional medicines across the world for generations. Brahmi has traditionally been used in Ayurvedic medicine for its beneficial qualities and for balancing all three doshas. The plant’s scientific name translates to “energy of universal consciousness” and according to folklore, has been thought to support the mind. You may also know it by other different name, such as water hyssop, baby tears, Jalnaveri, Jalanimba, Sambrani chettu, Nirbrahmi, Indian Pennywort, thyme-leaved gratiola, Bacopa, Babies tear, Bacopa monnieri and Hespestis monniera, Herb of Grace, but among them brahmi is the most common name. This particular creeping herb is native to the wetlands of southern and Eastern India and Sri Lanka, Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America. The plant grows small white flowers and has thick leaves that resemble those of a succulent. Brahmi is frequently incorporated into aquariums due to its ability to grow and live in water.
Bacopa is a medicinal herb used in Ayurveda, where it is also known as "Brahmi", after Brahma, the creator God of the Hindu pantheon. Fêted as the "herb of grace" and "the thinking person’s herb", Brahmi oil gifts you mental clarity by alleviating all kinds of mental ailments with its neuro-pharmacological effects. “It is known as the rejuvenator for all systems in the body and is one of the most commonly used medicated oils”.
Brahmi or Bacopa monnieri is a very well-known medicinal herb. It is used in Ayurveda for centuries. Brahmi is useful in nervous disorders, bronchitis, fever, swelling, abdominal pain, and flatulence. Brahmi has stomachic, digestive, rejuvenative, anti-epileptic, anti-pyretic and analgesic activities.
The oblong juicy leaves of this herb, when put under steam distillation yields Brahmi oil, which is known for its stimulating properties used for enhancing the efficiency of the brain in terms of accuracy, intelligence and attention and mostly prescribed for children to make them more studious, active and attentive.
Antioxidants are substances that help protect against cell damage caused by potentially harmful molecules called free radicals. Research suggests that damage caused by free radicals is linked to many chronic conditions. Bacopa monnieri contains powerful compounds that may have antioxidant effects. The antioxidants contained in Brahmi are essential for promoting a healthy lifestyle.
In a 2010 study "Pharmacological investigation of Bacopa monnieri on the basis of antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties" in J. Chem. Pharm. Res. by Abhishek Mathur, Satish K. Verma, Reena Purohit, Santosh K. Singh, Deepika Mathur, GBKS Prasad and V.K. Dua of the whole plant using various extracts, methanol extracts were found to have potent antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Active crude methanol extracts assayed for cellular toxicity to fresh sheep erythrocytes showed no cellular toxicity.
A 2009 study "Bacopa monnieri modulates antioxidant responses in brain and kidney of diabetic rats" in Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology by Radhika Kapoor, Saurabh Srivastava, Poonam Kakkar evaluated the protective effect of Bacopa monnieri on tissue antioxidant defense system and lipid peroxidative status in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Results showed Bm extract modulates antioxidant activity, and enhances the defense against ROS generated damage in diabetic rats.
Another 2000 study "Antioxidant activity of Bacopa monniera in rat frontal cortex, striatum and hippocampus" by Bhattacharya SK, Bhattacharya A, Kumar A, Ghosal S of Bacopa monnieri extract on rat brain showed dose-related increases in SOD, CAT and GPX activities, suggesting a significant antioxidant effect after subchronic administration. The increase in oxidative free radical scavenging activity by Bacopa monnieri may explain, in part, the cognitive-facilitating action noted in Ayurveda practice.
According to the National Cancer Institute, antioxidants can eliminate free radicals, the dangerous byproducts of cellular metabolism that can cause cells to undergo apoptosis (cell death) or mutate into cancerous cells. For example, bacosides, the main active compounds in Bacopa monnieri, have been shown to neutralize free radicals and prevent fat molecules from reacting with free radicals. When fat molecules react with free radicals, they undergo a process called lipid peroxidation.
These free radicals affect everything from our skin to our cardiovascular system, so a regular dose of brahmi in a daily or weekly diet can help maintain a high quality of life and a healthy metabolism. Antioxidants may also prevent certain types of cancer, research is ongoing into the direct pathways that the medicinal herb’s components take to prevent or slow the spread of cancer.
However, more scientific evidence and studies are required to support this claim. There is one particularly dangerous toxin, called acrylamide, which Brahmi has specifically shown resistance to; acrylamide is connected to neurodegenerative diseases, so this can add to this herb’s list of benefits as well.
Inflammation is your body’s natural response to help heal and fight disease. Brahmi leaves have anti-inflammatory property, effective in reducing swelling and inflammation. It is mostly used intreatment of gout, arthritis and other joint diseases. However, chronic, low-level inflammation has been linked to many chronic conditions, including cancer, diabetes, and heart and kidney disease.
In test-tube studies, Bacopa monnieri appeared to suppress the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are molecules that stimulate an inflammatory immune response. Also, in test-tube and animal studies, it inhibited enzymes, such as cyclooxygenases, caspases, and lipoxygenases, all of which play key roles in inflammation and pain. In animal studies, Bacopa monnieri had anti-inflammatory effects comparable to those of diclofenac and indomethacin, two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs commonly used to treat inflammation. Nevertheless, more research is needed to determine whether Bacopa monnieri reduces inflammation in humans.
A 2008 study "Inhibition of lipoxygenases and cyclooxygenase-2 enzymes by extracts isolated from Bacopa monniera" in J Ethnopharmacol. by Viji V, Helen A showed Bacopa monniera possesses anti-inflammatory activity through inhibition of COX and LOX and down-regulation of TNF-alpha.
The leaves of the plant or Brahmi oil can be rubbed topically on the affected area to help lower inflammation and reduce irritation. When the brahmi leaves are being rubbed topically on the affected area of the body, then the compounds that is being released can also help to reduce the swelling as well as eliminate the irritation, and the inflammation inside your body. This is an ideal treatment for people who are suffering from gout, arthritis, or any other inflammatory conditions.
Redness and Swelling:
Any irritation or inflammation in the body causes redness, swelling, pain and itching. Autoimmune diseases are one of the causes of this type of painful swelling as are insect bites and other external injuries. Brahmi has anti inflammatory properties that can be helpful in fighting this kind of redness and swelling in the body and the brain. The Brahmi could be used in managing chronic discomfort due to inflammation caused by autoimmune disorders.
Almost all of us including children live in a constant state of stress. Especially the stress that children go through during examination is terrible and needless to say, we adults always and forever live in a state of constant stress. I know it will be next to impossible to live a life free of stress, but we can learn to deal with it and certain herbs make it easier. Brahmi occupies a very important place in keeping us stress free.
The active ingredients in Brahmi can effect hormonal balance in the body and positively impact the balance of stress hormones in our body, thus inducing a calm, relaxed state in a natural way, avoiding the side effects of traditional pharmaceutical options for stress and anxiety relief. An anxiolytic property present in Brahmi extract soothes and calms anxious thoughts and panic attacks.
Brahmi works by stimulating the neurotransmitter hormones dopamine and serotonin in the brain. This brings about a feeling of peace and wellbeing. Brahmi is not an instant cure and works over time to control the substances that cause stress in the brain. It is a long-term but effective adaptogen which helps the body adapt itself to stress and function optimally under all circumstances. Brahmi is also helpful in post-natal depression.
Having all the beneficial saponins and phyto chemicals in possession, Brahmi oil acts as a natural adaptogen actively preventing the biochemical effects of stress and blocking the stress response in the body. It effectively reduces the expression of HSP70, a biomarker of stress in almost all the regions of the brain in particular the hippocampus and the cerebellum. Brahmi oil also increases the anti-oxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxide in the brain protecting it from oxidative damage and other stress related factors.
Using Brahmi externally as an oil and internally in the form of tea or capsules will help us pass through rough times in life without undue anxiety and depression. Try to make use of this herb often and combat stress effectively. Many confuse Brahmi with Indian Pennywort | Gotukala (Vallarai in Tamil and it’s botanical name is Centella Asiatica). Though Vallarai is also very good in improving the brain function, they both are different plants and have their own distinctive qualities.
You can chew the leaves from the Brahmi plant in order to get relief from the stress as well as anxiety. The active ingredients in the Brahmi can also effect the hormonal balance in your body as well as positively impact the balance of the stress hormones in the body, thereby inducing a very calm, as well as relaxed state in a more natural way. It will let you to avoid the side effect from a traditional pharmaceutical for stress and anxiety relief.
A 2003 study "Adaptogenic effect of Bacopa monniera (Brahmi)" in Pharmacol Biochem Behav. by Rai D, Bhatia G, Palit G, Pal R, Singh S, Singh HK showed the standardized extract of B. monniera possesses a potent adaptogenic effect.
Another 2002 study "Antistress effects of bacosides of Bacopa monnieri: modulation of Hsp70 expression, superoxide dismutase and cytochrome P450 activity in rat brain" in Phytotherapy Research, Volume 16, Issue 7 by D Kar Chowdhuri, D Parmar, P Kakkar et al in adult male Sprague Dawley rats on the antistress effect of bacosides of Brahmi showed Bacopa monnieri has the potential to modulate the activities of Hsp70, P450 and SOD, to prepare the brain to act under adverse conditions such as stress.
Acute and Chronic Stress:
It aids in overcoming acute and chronic stress. In addition to that this oil for the mind helps one in overcoming addiction to ill habits such as drug dependence, smoking, alcoholism etc. Furthermore, Brahmi oil assists in reducing the inflammation in the nerves and possesses neurological anti-aging effect.
With the presence of bacopaside I, bacopaside II and bacopasaponsin C, Brahmi oil naturally alleviates depression and anxiety. Just a gentle massage with Brahmi oil effectively relieves you from tension and fear and provides you a peaceful sleep. It lifts up your spirits and soothes your mind by calming down the nerves with a promise to provide you an eternal elevation.
The best way to alleviate stress is to blend 5 drops of Brahmi oil with 5 drops of Sandalwood oil, 5 drops of Lavender oil and 5 drops of Ylang Ylang oil with 10 ml of Virgin olive oil and massage your system followed by a warm bath diluted with 3 drops of Brahmi oil especially before going to bed can help you in relaxing your nerves, soothing your muscles, alleviating fatigue mentally and physically and grant you the determination to fight stress and its ill effects.
A mental health disorder that generally evokes when a person feels depressed, loss of mood, lack of interest in activities, feeling sad, anxious hopelessness and more. In case you are feeling the same then, taking Bacopa or so-called Brahmi can be beneficial to you. Brahmi or saponins contains the saponins called bacosides that helps to boosts the effects of specific neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine and serotonin. Brahmi also increases the effects of gamma aminobutyric acid or “GABA,” acetylcholine and serotonin, which are helpful to deal with depression.
Several animal researches of Bacopa’s effectiveness in treating depression have produced positive results, finding that Bacopa was nearly as effective as common prescription depression medications, but without the side effects. However certain human studies failed to find any anti-anxiety benefits from taking bacopa.
Brahmi has been used for thousands of years for treating anxiety and depression. When consumed internally, it is said to increase the serotonin levels in the brain which is the main reason for a calm mind. You can either take Brahmi in tablet form or try Brahmi tea.
"Bacopa Extract Displays Strong Serotonin Receptor Activity" in Nutraceuticals World study concluded Bacopa extract decreased cAMP production in cells with 5HT1a receptors, suggesting an agonistic effect. The effect was similar to results of a previous study where Bacopa displayed antidepressant effects comparable to imipramine.
A 2018 study "Comparative phytocheical evaluation of natural and micropropagated plants of Bacopa monnieri" in Marmara Pharmaceutical Journal by Firoj A Tamboli, Vinod D Rangari, Suresh G Killedar, Sagae U Jadhav, Trupti S Ghatage, Vishwajeet P Kore evaluated the comparative phytochemical constituents of natural and micro-propagated plants of Bacopa monnieri. The plant yields various phytoconstituents viz. alkaloids, phenolics, saponins, and flavonoids which are responsible for various activities of the plant. Results of comparative testing by HPTLC showed the phytoconstituents in micro-propagated plant are similar to that of the natural plant.
Another 2015 study "Bacopa monnieri promotes longevity in Caenorhabditis elegans under stress conditions" in Pharmacognosy Magazine by Suresh C Phulara, Virendra Shukla, Sudeep Tiwari, Rakesh Pandey evaluated the antioxidant and stress resistance potentials of Bacopa monnieri aqueous extract using Caenorhabditis elegans animal model system. Antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH. reducing power, and polyphenol content. Antistress potential was measured through thermal stress and oxidative stress. Results showed significantly enhanced stress tolerance and increased mean lifespan of worms during normal and oxidative stress. BMW was able to up-regulate expression of stress associated gene hsp-16.2 which significantly (p<0.001) extends the mean lifespan of worms under stress conditions. Results suggest BMW acts as an antistressor and potent reactive oxygen species scavenger which enhances survival of worms in various stress conditions.

Results showed the ethanol extract, EtOAc fraction and n-BuOH fraction significantly reduced mobility times in both FST and TST All the samples showed no inhibition against locomotor activity.
It’s considered an adaptogenic herb, meaning that it increases your body’s resistance to anixety by decreasing the levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), Brahmi helps to regulate its (cartisol) production. Lower levels of cortisol in turn reduce the ill effects of anxiety in the body. It is also helpful in treatment of disorders like depression, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, etc. The active ingredients in this herb can affect hormonal balance in the body and positively impact the balance of stress hormones in our body, thereby inducing a calm, relaxed state in a natural way, avoiding the side effects of traditional pharmaceutical options for stress and anxiety relief. It can control anxiety: if you are prone to anxiety and panic attacks then it is suggested that you inculcate Brahmi in your daily diet.
Research suggests that Bacopa monnieri helps reduce stress and anxiety by elevating your mood and reducing levels of cortisol, a hormone that is closely linked to stress levels.
One rodent study showed that Bacopa monnieri had anti-anxiety effects comparable to those of lorazepam (benzodiazepine), a prescription medication used to treat anxiety. However, human studies on Bacopa monnieri and anxiety show mixed results.
For example, two 12-week human studies found that taking 300 mg of Bacopa monnieri daily significantly reduced anxiety and depression scores in adults, compared with the placebo treatment. Yet, another human study found that treatment with Bacopa monnieri had no effect on anxiety. More large-scale human studies are needed to confirm its effects on stress and anxiety.
A 2019 study "Bacopa monnieri Supplements Offset Paraquat-Induced Behavioral Phenotype and Brain Oxidative Pathways in Mice" published in Central Nervous System Agents by Gokul Krishna, Ravikumar Hosamani, Muralidhara evaluated the influence of Bacopa monnieri on behaviors reflecting anxiety-like state and motor function, along with selected biochemical changes in brain regions of mice chronically exposed to the herbicide, paraquat (PQ). Bacopa monnieri supplementation significantly reversed PQ-induced reduction of exploratory behavior, gait abnormalities and motor impairment. In another study, Bacopa monnieri prevented the reduction in dopamine levels and reversed cholinergic activity in brain regions essential for motor (striatum) pathology. Results suggest Bacopa monnieri supplementation mitigates paraquat-induced behavioral deficits and brain oxidative stress in mice.
Chewing 2-3 Brahmi leaves at a time can provide you relief from anxiety. Eating brahmi decrease the levels of cortisol in the body, which is a stress hormone. Brahmi lowers the effects of anxiety and makes one feel relaxed and calm. You can eat Brahmi leaves, dried and mixed into a powder. Also, you can drink Brahmi juice daily for 1-2 months or take Brahmi supplements. Daily consumption will allow you to deal with your anxiety attacks and also helps reduce anxiety, palpitations, nervousness, insomnia, tiredness, headache and stress. An acute, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study of 320 mg and 640 mg doses of Bacopa monnieri on multitasking stress reactivity and mood was published in Phytotherapy Research by Sarah Benson, Luke A Downey, Con Stough, Mark Wetherell, Andrea Zangara, Andrew Scholey. This double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study evaluated the acute effects of Bacopa monnieri extract (KeenMind-CDRI 08) in normal healthy participants during completion of multitasking framework (MTF). Study concluded that acute Bacopa monnieri supplementation produced some adaptogenic and nootropic effects.
Insomnia a sleep disorder where person is unable to sleep properly and Lack of quality sleep in turn causes various disorders like depression, anxiety, tension and stress.
Ayurvedic practitioner recommend to massage with Brahmi oil and take brahmi tonic to get relif from insomnia disorder. Massaging the scalp with Brahmi oil can help to overcome sleep disorder, which can lead to cure the depression, tension, anxiety as well as stress. It is also recommended that the person who is suffering from such negative domain of health can massage his head every night with this oil. It is also helpful with children who are hyperactive too.
"Effect of pre- and post-treatment with Bacopa monnieri on phencyclidine-induced disruptions in object recognition memory and cerebral calbindin, parvalbumin, and calretinin immunoreactivity in rats" published in Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment 2019 by P Piyabhan, P Tingpej. N Duansak about Neuroprotection, Cognitive Benefits and PCP Induced Schizophrenic Model, decreased gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic neurons in the brain of both schizophrenic patients and animal models indicate that impairment of GABAergic function is implicated in the pathophysiology of the disorder. Study evaluated the cognitive-enhancement and neuroprotective effects of Brahmi on novel object recognition memory and GABAergic neuronal density defined by presence of binding proteins in a subchronic phencyclidine rat model of schizophrenia. Study demonstrated the effects, both partial restoration of cognitive deficit and neuroprotection, of Brahmi, and elucidated its underlying mechanism of actions via increased GABAergic neurons in a PCP-induced schizophrenic-like model.
A 2008 study "Neuroprotective effect of Bacopa monnieri on beta-amyloid-induced cell death in primary cortical culture" in Journal of Ethnopharmacology by Nanteetip Limpeanchob, Kornkanok Ingkaninan et al evaluated the neuroprotective effects of Brahmi extracts against beta-amyloid protein (25-35) and glutamate induced neurotoxicity in primary cortical cultured neurons. Results showed the Brahmi extract protected neurons from beta-amyloid induced cell death, but not glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. The neuroprotection may be attributed to its ability to suppress cellular acetylvholiinesterase activity but not the inhibition of glutamate-induced toxicity. The extract promoted cell survival and Brahmi treated neurons expressed lower level of reactive oxygen species suggesting Brahmi restrained intracellular oxidative stress which prolonged the life span of the culture neurons. The extract also exhibited both reducing and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities.
Increases Brain Functions:
Brahmi protects the brain cells. It prevents and treats many diseases that are related to brain. For instance, scientists are now considering brahmi for treating Parkinson disease which affects the brain. It is also being researched as a potential medicine for patients who suffer from Alzheimer’s diseases which results in rapid degeneration of brain cells.
It is often referred to as a "brain-rejuvenating" plant. It is celebrated as a memory booster from time immemorial. In Ayurveda medicine, Brahmi extract and supplements are recommended for kids aged between 6 to 8 as they help greatly is increasing focus and attention among them. Consumption of Brahmi improves hand-eye coordination in kids and makes them more aware of their actions and surroundings by making the brain more alert. They stimulate the brain which promotes sharper thinking, memory and learning abilities. It is also suggested that people suffering from Alzheimer’s and seizures consume Brahmi.
Medicinally, the entire plant has been used in different formulations to treat various disorders, particularly those involving poor memory, intellect and anxiety. Used as a brain tonic, it promotes cerebrum development and rejuvenates the mind by improving concentration and memory. ‘Bacosides (chemical compound in Brahmi) is responsible for improving efficiency of transmission of signals. It also stimulates the mind by improving alertness and focus while simultaneously calming it by reducing stress and improving sleep quality.
One study in mice showed that supplementing with Bacopa monnieri improved their spatial learning and ability to retain information. The same study also found that it increased dendritic length and branching. Dendrites are parts of nerve cells in the brain that are closely linked to learning and memory.
Additionally, a 12-week study in 46 healthy adults observed that taking 300 mg of Bacopa monnieri daily significantly improved the speed of processing visual information, learning rate, and memory, compared with the placebo treatment.
Another 12-week study in 60 older adults found that taking either 300 mg or 600 mg of Bacopa monnieri extract daily improved memory, attention, and the ability to process information, compared with the placebo treatment.
Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD):
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by symptoms like hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness. Interestingly, research has shown that Bacopa monnieri may help reduce ADHD symptoms.
One study in 31 children aged 6–12 years found that taking 225 mg of Bacopa monnieri extract daily for 6 months significantly reduced ADHD symptoms, such as restlessness, poor self-control, inattention, and impulsivity in 85% of the children. A double-blind, placebo controlled, randomized trial of 36 children with ADHD showed a significant benefit at 12 weeks, with improvement in sentence repetition, logical memory and paired associate learning tasks.
Another study in 120 children with ADHD observed that taking an herbal blend that contained 125 mg of Bacopa monnieri improved attention, cognition, and impulse control, compared with the placebo group. Although these findings are promising, more large-scale studies examining the effects of Bacopa monnieri on ADHD are needed before it can be recommended as a treatment.
Water hyssop has been used to treat ADHD with promising results. Brahmi can be beneficial for the hyperactive children. The leaf of your brain also show many similarities with the cerebellum thus can also help the memory and its concentration.
Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person feel convulsion and seizures are series of disturbed brain action. Epilepsy generally takes place when permanent changes in brain tissue affect the brain to be too excitable and send out abnormal signals. For thousands of years, the leaves of the herb have been used to treat epilepsy as a neurological tonic as well as for cognitive improvement. It is also used to cure many neurological problem like epilepsy when taken along with Vacha. The chemicals of bacosides A and B can help to improve the neuro-transmission among the brain cells. They can also help to repair the damage of the neuron too. Its chemical properties helps to mitigate the neuro-degeneration. Brahmi contains antiepileptic properties that are very useful for epilepsy sufferers. It not only protects the areas of the brain responsible for serotonin uptake but also helps to stabilize the neurotransmitter. In addition Brahmi extracts do have a property that regulates the calcium flux across cell membrane channels.
Often characterized by undetectable periods of vigorous shaking, epilepsy is a group of long-term neurological disorders. With Bacoside –A as the major component, Brahmi essential oil is often paired with Ghee in Ayurveda to treat epilepsy by reducing the occurrence of convulsion.
It induces changes in specific parts of the brain such as striatum and the hippocampus to mediate the reducing activity of the epileptic seizures. Brahmi oil greatly influences the expression of mGluR8 receptors which possess protective mechanism against excito toxicity and hyper excitation. Additionally, Brahmi oil prevents the depletion of dopamine and serotonin and greatly reduces the death of cells in the midbrain that generate dopamine, which remains as one of the causes of Parkinson’s disease.
Numerous researches carried out in this regard confirmed the positive reduction of the depletion of serotonin and dopamine in rats subjected to chronic stress and supplemented with Bacopa monnieri. It has also been proved that the presence of Brahmi oil prevented the depletion of dopamine even in cases of neurotoxicity induced with rotenone and caffeine.
A study in mice showed hersaponin provided protection against seizures. The study using high doses of Bacopa extract demonstrated anticonvulsant effect, an effect not observed with lower doses.
A 2012 study "Decreased GABA receptor in the cerebral cortex of epileptic rats: effect of Bacopa monnieri and Bacoside-A" in Journal of Biomedical Science by Jobin Mathew, Savitha Balakrishnan, Sherin Antony, Pretty Mary Abraham and CS Paulose about Bacopa monnieri and Bacoside-A treatment reversed epilepsy associated changes to near control suggesting decreased GABA receptors in the cerebral cortex have an important role in epileptic occurrence.
A study "Bacopa monnieri augmentation therapy in the treatment of anhedonia, preclinical and clinical evaluation" published in Phytotherapy Research by Laura Micheli, Silvia Spitoni, Lorenzo Di Cesare Mannelli, Anna Rita Bilia, Carla Ghelardini, Stefano Pallanti have suggested efficacy in neuropsychiatric diseases. This study evaluated the effects against anhedonia using a standardized extract (20% bacosides). for a mouse model of a depressive-like syndrome induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). m The extract dose-dependently countered the immobility time in Porsolt and Tail suspension tests (p<0.01). At the sucrose preference test, directly related to the ability of feeling pleasure, the extract counteracted the reduction of sucrose intake induced by LPS (p<0.01). There was also reduction of cytokines, cortisol, and artemin LPS-dependent alterations in plasma and increased brain-derived neurotropic factor levels (p<0.05). In a clinical study of 42 patients with significant anhedonia, the Pears Sample T-test showed a significant improvement (p<0.05). Results suggest R. monnieri extract may be effective for the management of anhedonia.
One of the most prized benefits of Brahmi is its ability to stimulate the mind, particularly in terms of memory and concentration. Brahmi is known to increase retention and focus. It has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine to increase focus and retention. Regular use of Bacopa is quite helpful to improve your mental performance and cognitive function.
According to the University of Michigan Health System, its leaves consist of bacosides, which help to improve learning, memory and overall mental function. Research of healthy individuals who took bacopa for three months found that the accuracy of their memory improved, and small studies of children in India found that taking 1,000 mg per day of Bacopa improved memory, reaction time and observation. But another study of 76 people aged 40 to 65 years found that taking bacopa had no impact on restoring memory and only slight improvement in retaining new information.
Some of the organic compounds in Brahmi stimulate cognitive pathways in the brain to boost cognitive ability, according to a 2018 study in Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry.
There is a 2017 study "Systematic Overview of Bacopa monnieri Dominant Poly-Herbal Formulas on Children and Adolescents" by James D Kean, Luke A Downey, and Con Stough about effect on cognition and behavior in children and adolescents. Review summarizes clinical trials investigating the effect of Bacopa monnieri-dominant polyherbal formulas and their effects on cognition, memory, learning and behavior in children and adolescents. Results showed significantly improved performance on the 'Working Memory' factor, more specifically spatial working memory accuracy. Results provide further support for two other published studies on cognitive enhancing effects.
A 2004 study in Alternative Medicine Review, Volume 9, No 1 on rat model with extract with 25% bacoside A showed an anxiolytic effect comparable to benzodiazepene anxiolytic drug, lorazepam. Study results suggest only chronic administration of extract is associated with cognitive-enhancing effects.
Many studies have shown it to be an effective way to lower oxidative stress and to stimulate the formation of new neural pathways in the brain. This helps keep our minds sharp even when we get older.
One of the oldest uses of Water Hyssop is for improving memory. Studies have found that it improved memory processing, working memory and attention. Brahmi leaves can affect the hippocampus part of your brain, which is also responsible for intelligence, memory as well as concentration. When it comes from the memory intensifying property’s Brahmi will be truthfully imputable due to its two active molecules called bacopasides. Bacopasides is a compound that is known to improve memory, intensify focus, concentration and aids with learning new tasks. Brahmi herb is If taken routine can increase activity of protein kinase. It also increases protein production in the brain cells that play a role in learning and memory. Brahmi in addition rectifies and repairs a damaged nerve cell in the brain, helping to improve brain function and boosting memory. Like Vallarai plant, Brahmi also can be used for enhancing memory. Especially for children who have trouble memorizing, Brahmi powder will come to the rescue very effectively.
Brahmi oil is Mother Nature’s gift for supporting cognitive enhancement and neuro-protective attributes. This is attributed to the rich content of saponins such as Bacoside A and B. It actively influences in regulating the levels of dopamine and serotonin, the neurotransmitters released by the nerve cells that pass on signals to other nerve cells that help in motor control, secretion of hormones and is the contributor of feeling of well being and happiness that makes you feel secure and complete.
With its antioxidant properties, it induces cell transport, metabolism of 5-HT and Tryptophan Hydroxylase (TPH2) resulting in providing a protective environment for the cells and promoting the neuron communication. It helps in increasing the branching points in the neurons and the dendritic intersections that results in the neuronal growth in hippocampus, the area in brain associated with enhancing memory retention and improvement in the learning performance.
This also results in increasing the encoding of information in the brain with increased retention speeds, improving delayed recall and verbal learning. It is for this reason, Brahmi oil has been in existence since primordial times in the field of holistic healing as a powerful memory enhancer to increase the speed of processing information and cognition and decrease the performance time, reaction time and error incidence for people of all ages especially children for good progress in the field of academic learning.
There was a study conducted on 76 adults on the affect of Brahmi on human memory. Half the people in the group were given brahmi capsules and the other half were not (placebo group).
